the other day my buddy and i were hanging our stands in a new spot in this new timber we got to hunt...well i just got donw telling my buddy that i dont trust them ratchet straps and that i took mine off and put a chain on mine..well anyways he said that we should go ahead and hang his stand anyways and when i could get a chain for him we would switch the strap for the chain..welp i began hanging the stand and i put the strap around a fork in the tree and buckled one part of the strap to the stand the other side i was holding onto getting ready to put it around the other side of the stand...at this point i am holding onto the ratchet part of the strap, my buddy is about 5 feet below me on the climbing stick and he had been waiting for me to ask him for help when his cell phone rang and he started talking on it quitely to his brother (who was hunting about a 1/2 from us) but anyways all the sudden i saw the ratched break and the stand start plummeting down the ground, before i knew it or could say look out the 25 pound stand had already hit my buddy in the head and bounced off and stared falling the rest of the way to the ground...luckily his cell did ring because if not he would of still been looking up at me and it prolly would of hit him in the face...folks i dont trust the ratchet straps no farther than i could throw one, if he would of been any farther down the tree the impact would of probably knocked him out or gave him a concushion...be carefull with these straps..just wanted to give everyone the heads on up on them

Re: Ratchet Straps

I've been using ratchet straps for many years and have never had a problem. The one thing I do every year is closely inspect them for any small tears or abnormal wear. I also have a few stands that use chains. I always buy extra straps and all my stands have a back strap or chain attached also---for that "just in case".

Glad your friend is ok!

Sorry to hear about that Kyle...but I must say...I'll use a rachet strap over a chain any day. The one you were using musta had a flaw or something...I never had a strap fail me yet.

[/ QUOTE ]

Ditto!! I've never had a problem with my rachet straps. They are so much easier than a chain....

i cant agree and say they are easier than a chain, for me i have fabricated my own little set up so all i have to do is swing the chain around the fork in the tree and clip the chain to the stand and i can have a stand hung in less that a couple minutes...the ratchet deffintly did break is somewere in the woods laying in the snow...

Re: Ratchet Straps

I read about somebody using ratchet straps that fell when a squirrel had chewed part of the way through his strap; that makes me worry about them. We leave out ladder stands up all season. I now check them from the back before I climb one with a nylon strap. We are installing chain on all of them as we can.

yeah that was my biggest concern in using them...squirels will chew on anything...i have noticed they chewed up one of my seats on my stand in just a day or two, a little strap would take them no time at all...id like to see them chew through a steel chain grin.gif tooth ache!

Re: Ratchet Straps

well i'm sorry to hear that your friend got attacked by the stand. but i have rachet straps on all of my stands and they have never failed me. but i also have a chain one one of them and a dog lead cable on the the other. we also use copper wire to hold them up while putting the ratchet straps on and i leave that there so they are plenty sturdy if a ratchet strap does happen to break.

Good advice John!!!

You may also try using a tree hook to hang the stand on until your sure the stand is secure and in place. It also takes the wieght of the stand off of your arm so both of them are free...if your using a safety belt of course.

[/ QUOTE ] I am with you I usually start with a chain and after the stand is up I throw a strap around it. I like to be safe and my stand is more quiet this way.

Re: Ratchet Straps

I have used Ratchet Straps for years, I always inspect them as critters could chew on them. Get good ones and not cheap ones. Ones with good racheting abilites and with good straps. I would use it any day over a chain.

Sorry about your mishap, I have to imagine your buddy's head had to hurt and possibly need stitches!! OUCH!!
