LETMGROW
We have a 25 acre field on our property which is broken up into several food plots as well as some high quality clover and alfalfa. Problem here is our deer seem to want to feed at night. After legal shooting hours. This is especially true after the RUT starts. We have thought about creating cover in strips etc. out in the field. Maybe corn or milo, But something the deer can travel in and feel safe in. We have considered corn or milo. We know growing trees would be the answer but we want to use this in our lifetimes not 25 years from now. I have seen ad's for real fast growing trees, has anyone ever tried these? Does anybody have any other ideas?
rockefeller66
Re: Need Quick cover in open field my neighbor has some he put in about 6 years ago or so and they weren't 6ft-7ft tall and now they are HUGE, like 80ft tall, real flimsy trees that are tall and narrow, forgot the names but when the wind picks up the sway like nothing I have ever seen but make great blocks for what you are talking about! dogdoc
Re: Need Quick cover in open field I use a forage sorghum to create quick cover for open plots. Much easier to grow than corn and some varieties will grow up to 7 foot tall. todd
LETMGROW
Re: Need Quick cover in open field Appreciate the come backs guys. Will those 80 ft. trees withstand northern NY winds and temperatures?

wtnhunt
Re: Need Quick cover in open field Lespedeza is commonly used as a pasture and hayfield seed. It is a bit expensive. seedland has some lespedeza seed.
Thayer
Re: Need Quick cover in open field Here try this link...it has a bunch of good info. http://plants.usda.gov/cgi_bin/topics.cg...spedeza+bicolor It is supposed to grow real well in moderate soils, it can be used as another decent food source and won't be invasive. LETMGROW
Re: Need Quick cover in open field I did check this out. Linked right on which is amazing for my lack of computer skills. Anyway, This looks interesting. My soil is not the greatest as it is somewhat course and gravely. I am going to call my local USDA for their opinions also. I know some of these folks personally. I really appreciate the info guys, This site is the best!!!!
