Turkeygirl
Ok guys, the turkeys near my house are like gone. Tomorrow because I have just one class, I am going out probably after lunch to state land all day long to hunt fall turkeys. I will find a map and hope I don't get lost. Since I've never hunted state land, my plan consists of trying to find turkey sign, hopefully fresh. I'm wondering though, what calls would work the best to try and get a turkey respond if I was to kind of "run and gun"? It is kind of scary going to state land, never done it, not sure what it is like, don't wanna get lost, and disappointing that I may not be getting a turkey from the woods I've always hunted. Any ideas are appreciated!
HuntnMa
Re: State land fall turkeys..tips good luck.....bring your compass and relax, enjoy your hunt....i would go as far as i could away from any parking areas(people)....some soft clucks and purrs would be the method i would try....maybe a kee kee or two....i wish we had a fall season , other than in archery at some of the wmas i hunt at.... Lumpy
Re: State land fall turkeys..tips You can never be to safe, so like Huntinma suggested take a compass. As far as hunting unfamilar land, I would hike back as far as I felt comfortable, and get to the highest point so you can listen for a long ways . Turkeys are quiet vocal when they come off the roost and when they hit the ground and get things squared away. As far as calling, if you are hunting a flock of hens and poults, kee-kee's and a lost call would work the best. Start off soft and if you get no responce start pouring it on( meaning put some emoition in your calling and crank up the volume.) If you are hunting a flock of adult hens , a flock of adult gobblers , or a flock of jakes, remember that each flock has a boss. So if you can challenge the boss or disturb the flocks pecking order you will be in good shape. When calling , match their call but with a little more volume.( with these flocks you will usaully need to set up really close). Oh, box calls are tough to beat. Hope this helps good luck
