AJ----I thought I would post this here rather than the big game slot. I value several people's opinions & they seem to visit here the most.

I'm planning next year's hunting trips & putting in for vaction time at work. Here in the western states you have to put in early in the year for the fall hunts.

#1----a WY moose hunt. I have enough points accumulated where I should draw a bull tag. I've got 6 points & last year you had a 66% chance of getting a tag. Drawbacks---it's $1200 for the tag & probably another $3500 for an outfitter-----for that you can have a plains game safari in South Africa. But it's a horseback hunt in the wilderness & everyone should do that once in their lifetime. Another thing I thinking how much of a hunt is it? Outfitter says it's 100% for a 40" bull. He scouts for elk & knows the drainages that the moose are in. I like DIY hunts but I can't scout in WY & it's a moose--I can't pack that out on my back. The money isn't a REAL drawback because I'm going to spend it on a hunting trip & I've got it in the bank.

#2. A high country mulie hunt here in Colorado. It takes 4 points to draw & I've got 5. It's only a $30 tag. It's a DIY HUNT. It would be a back pack hunt about an hour north of my house. This would be a tough hunt, very physical & challenging. The hunt is at timberline---10500' Bucks be old mossybacks----28-30 inch. I sort of know the area but I would have to scout a bunch. Plus anyone who has done a back pack hunt ----they are hard. Nothing is easy about it. I know I've done 5----you sleep in the rain, eat freeze dried food, iodine pills for water----I ususally lose over 12 pounds during them. I'm 50 now--I know I can get in shape for it but I would rather do it for another bighorn rrather than a mulie. Sheep will be in the picture in a couple more years.

#3---My usually elk hunt. I've got all the goodies---wall tent, stove, cot, etc. I know the area like the back of my hand & I usually can tag out with a raghorn bull----but every once in awhile--you can get a 300 class bull. It's fun & it's in God's country----but I've done it.

Which one ??

I can only pick one. I've got a TX hunt for hogs & Rio's booked for the 1st week in April.

Re: your thoughts

I'd like to see your trophy room, Bob.

Are you set on those 3 choices? Depending on what you've hunted (or haven't hunted), I personally plan on going on a DIY antelope hunt in WY as soon as I graduate. Success rate is high, and it is totally different country from what I've ever seen before.

I would tend to go after something you haven't hunted before. Remember, you don't get younger either. Go do the difficult hunts while you're able. The memories will last forever. Don't wait too long.

I understand how rewarding a DIY hunt is, but, not THAT many guys ever get the opportunity to go moose hunting. Heck, I hope to go elk hunting some day!!

I won't tell you which one I would pick (although I would definately have a hard time deciding) but I'm sure you'll enjoy which ever hunt you choose. Need a videographer??!?!?!? grin.gif

Re: your thoughts

While I can not answer for you, I am pretty sure I know what I would do. Each hunter has their own priorities. I would definately take a moose or elk hunt over a deer hunt. If you have not done the horseback wilderness hunt, I would lean that way. As you said, everyone should do it at least once. If you are worried about the moose hunt being too easy, increase your standards. Hold out for a very nice moose.

Re: your thoughts

HuntinSon-----You'll have a ball hunting antelope in WY. Lots of antelope, lots of public land------It's a ton of FUN. Just don't shoot the 1st one you see. Plus put the head & cape on dry ice so the hair doesn't slip. Also all my hunting has been in Colorado---I've learn to apply for tags & get those preference points---then you'll get drawn. I did that for both bighorn, mtn goat , antelope & spring bear back when we had a season.

Everyday i decide & then change my mind. I can hunt moose here in Colorado if I ever get drawn---I've been applying for over 10 years now & have the most points there are. But the area gets 5 tags & over 400 people apply for them. Slim odds.

Re: your thoughts

Personally I would do any of the North American hunts over the African thing. Only because of my desire to hunt all of North American game that I can. While Africa is great - I want to experience the beuaty of my own country and keep my money here in the American economy
