AJ
I agree with you. I hate elitests. They are bad for the sport. If they want to use traditional, primitive, etc, thats fine. don't force their mentality on others. Anything that makes the shooter more accurate I am all for. It does not take away from the sport, it opens it to those with aging eyes, bad eyesight, etc. that now get to enjoy the use of a front stuffer while chasing deer. Its not uncommon for people to merge back to primitive weapons after they use the modern type. So its a win - win for the muzzleloading, sportsmen, and the traditionalists. jdickey
Re: Scopes on smokepoles Texas permits scopes on muzzleloaders as well as New Mexico. My thinking is that without scopes, there would most probably be an increase in the number of WOUNDED animals; given the fact that many ML's have an effective range of over 300 yards, there will always be that person who will attempt that long shot. Without a scope the chances of wounding the animal will dramatically increase. Conversely, without scopes, most probably there would be "shorter shots" taken, but again.... maybe not the most accurate!

LETMGROW
Re: Scopes on smokepoles If I had my way it would be mandatory to have a scope on all hunting rifles. I view this as a safety measure as well as cutting down on those so called Hail Mary shots!
David_218
Re: Scopes on smokepoles I personally use a peep sight on my M/L. I feel when you place a scope on a more modern M/L then it becomes a modern weapon, especially if it is able to use "Smokeless powder". AJ
Re: Scopes on smokepoles If they are they are not useful under 150 yards then. Even with the smokeless ML using a Shockwave or SST its a long poke to shoot 250 yards. I know, I do it. I think you are confusing maximun effective range with maximum range. There is a big difference. You start talking about 4-5" high at 100 yards to make it dead on at 200, giving you about 20" more drop at 300 yards. Thats not really effective range. AJ
Re: Scopes on smokepoles [ QUOTE ] I wonder what the range is on the new smokeless powder muzzle loader that uses 120 gr. of 4350 to shoot 3000 fps? [/ QUOTE ] If it did exist, it would be quite a ways. Hopefully, you are just being funny.

AJ
Re: Scopes on smokepoles Actually, its not really off course. Its still part of the debate of optics on muzzleloaders. Scope selections was never the topic of this thread.
SaskMan
Re: Scopes on smokepoles I won't shoot mine at anyhting much over 100 yards, I just would rather take a shot that I am 100% sure is a good one!!! As for the scopes, yes I do have on and I will never change. I helps my accuracy. Scope or no scope, you only get one crack with a smokepole, you'd better make it count.
