My Sad deer hunting story w/pic

IL second season shotgun I spent at my dad's farm. It's only like 28.5 acres and the deer don't hang out there, they just trickle through from time to time. I figured I'ld see 4 deer in 4 days of hunting not the best odds but it's all I had.

Like I said there isn't a bunch of deer running through there but that's not saying that there aren't some big deer running around. This rub showed up sometime between when I went to Southern IL for first shotgun season and when I was putting my stand out at my dad's for second season. I would have been happy with any deer but I was hoping that the deer that made this would show up.

I've got a shotgun in the pic for some reference to the size of this rub, this was definitely not made by a little fork horn

Well second season rolled in and I parked at my uncles house and walked back to my dad's place so I wouldn't kick anything out on my way to the back of the property. It was COOOOOLLLLLDDD and had been snowing all night. With knowing that my chances would be few and far between I had planned to pretty much sit all day for 4 straight days. Well day 1 I didn't pack my feet good enough and around 11:00 my fee were frozen. I decided to head home grab a bite to eat and get warmed up and then get back out. So I headed home and returned at almost 1:00... well the buck that (most likely) made this rub was bedded down approx 15 yards from where I entered the back pasture. I know this because he got up and ran away when I came back at 1:00. I checked the tracks and it looks like he bedded down just shortly before I showed up in the morning, he let me walk right by him and basically watched me get in my stand which was only about 50 yards away. He watched me all morning and and let me walk right by him again when I went home at 11. When I came back at 1:00 he got spooked and took off. I have no idea on the # of points he had but my guess is 10, he was at least 24" wide and would probably dress out over 200#'s.

He came across the property at least 2 more times (in the dark) in those 4 days, he has a pretty distinct track and took the same path the other 2 times.

Looks like him and a small 6 point were calling dad's place home or at least a frequent stop when the rut rolled around. I'm going to try to make a few improvements out there this year so hopefully I can hunt there a little more next year with some high hopes wink.gif

Ain't deer hunting fun!!!

Amazing what the mature boys will do eh Gary?

Want to hear what Shawn would say? No? I'm gonna' tell you anyway, he'd say something like:

"*&6%* DUDE, they don't get that big for nothin',......"

He'd probably add a few more $@@%^'s, but this is a family site.

Better luck next year bud.

Re: My Sad deer hunting story w/pic

I know I have had them watch me before. Used to have an old mature buck that I am certain was bedding just a short way into the woods on the side of the house.

Found a rub similar in size to that one on a cedar tree here, that I have not yet seen the deer who made it, however the wife has seen a big 10 we have no game cam pics of twice.

"Folks, that buck that just ran out on me was an absolute GIANT! Give me a minute folks......." grin.gif

That's deer hunting Gary, are you still bow hunting at all?

[/ QUOTE ]

I'm trying to still get out a few times with the bow, with the cold weather setting in and all the crops down it's kind of a fine art figuring out when they will be coming through the property - unfortunately most of the time is during the night when I'm asleep
