Just took my new 444. win back. She wouldnt work. The dealer had no other ones in stock so they gave me 90.00 off a new Marlin 45-70 guide gun. Just put the burris on it tonight and will get the first round out of her tommorw. Looks sweet. I just hope this on will go bang. Anyone here use the 4570. Im new to the big bore game.

Re: New 444 broke.

Personally, I think you have a much better gun in the Marlin. I am not a Win 94 fan.

It's a sweet round that can be used in mild form to some shoulder thumping, heavy bullet, bone crushing monster! The factory loads from Rem, Win, Fed, etc are fairly tame. The are at a lower pressure level so shooters can shoot them in the old trapdoor guns. The Marlin can safely shoot Stage 2 loads. These are where the 45-70 comes into its own. They are available from a few specialty load companies like Buffalo Bore and Cor-Bon. You can read my write up on the .45-70 Government on my Cartridge of the Week thread.

Re: New 444 broke.

I am a Marlin Guide Gun Fan. The 45/70 is an ageless round, IMO. I use this gun for just about everything...but my absolute favorite hunting is hogs in heavy brush. I like to low crawl in after 'em and the guide gun fits in their hidey holes quite nicely. I have shot them on full blwon sprints in open fields, however.

The factory loads by most MFR's are kind of meek and mild mannered in my book. I do like the Corbon 405 Gr. Penetrator, though. This has a real nice muzzle velocity coupled with an absolutely devestating bullet for tough game. I've dropped, almost instantly, several hogs in the 300lb class, a 1600 lb buffalo, bear and deer with this bullet.

I played with a lot of optical set-ups with this gun and I finaly settled on a 50MM Red Dot Scope without magnification. I zero at 150 yards as that is about the max distance I'm comfortable with without magnification. The red dot is real nice for moving targets as you can shoot with both eyes open and the dot naturally tracks the target.

You should have a lot of fun with this rifle. Part of that fun is putting a lot of rounds down range. Big bullets and heavy charges can make this not so fun when shooting a 45/70. I put on a Pachmyer recoil pad and it helped immensely. Limb Savers makes a great one as well.
