New Mexico Confirms First Cases Of CWD In Wild Elk

SANTA FE, NM - The New Mexico Department of Game and Fish (DGF) announced last week that it's confirmed that two wild elk in the southern Sacramento Mountains have tested positive for chronic wasting disease (CWD), making them the first elk in the state to test positive for the disease.

The DGF says both elk were killed in an area southeast of Cloudcroft, New Mexico, in game management unit 34. A mule deer recently tested positive for CWD in the same area.

One of the elk was a mature bull killed by a hunter in late October. The other elk that tested positive for CWD was a cow that was found in poor condition by a DGF conservation officer.

The DGF says it will continue to monitor the disease by testing hunter-killed animals in game management units 34 and 19. Hunters are encouraged to continue submitting their animals for testing.
