My First Buck plus a Bonus Doe!!

I finally got my first buck on Thursday evening!! Took me about 5 years and I was beginning to think I would have to wait another year. It started by waking up at 5:30 in the morning. At a chilly 28 degrees I headed out to my stand. After I got settled in I had an unexpected rumbling in my stomach. Well this was right at day break and there was no holding this one. I had to get out. After all was said and done I decided since there wasn’t anything going to be coming my way, that I would try some still hunting. I worked my way through what we call the Bond Draw. With out seeing much I decided to ease my way back to the truck. On the way back I was easing along the top of a flat when I saw antlers where the side of the flat started to drop. The 8 point buck saw me and stood up. I put my gun on the shooting sticks and took aim. The condensation from my breath froze on the scope so I could hardly see him. When I got the crosshairs on the buck I shot. At the shot he ran away like nothing happened. I went over to check out where he was and didn’t find a thing. No blood, no hair, nothing. Between those findings and the way he ran away I know I missed him clean. As you might imagine I was slightly mad. I decided to head back to camp and shoot my rifle. I got there and my dad had shot a spike!! I took a few pictures for him then I went to shoot my rifle. It was way off. I didn’t have enough ammo to sight it in so my dad said I could take his rifle. I grabbed a snack and headed back out to try some more still hunting. I got out there and had a nice doe about 145 yards away but she never turned to give me a good shot. I went back to camp and grabbed some lunch. My brother, Trevor, was cleaning a doe and a spike that he had taken the day before. After he was done we headed out together. We decided to ease down a creek bottom to a stand and stay there. We eased our way through and scared a few does but couldn’t get a shot. We got to the spot where we wanted to go. When we got there he said he thought we should try a different spot. I said what do we have to lose so we went. We were easing down the road when I spotted a doe in a creek bottom about 30 yards away. I eased up to the fence and got a good rest. For some reason she didn’t spook! When I got the crosshairs on her heart I squeezed the trigger. She leaped forward and dropped right there. She kicked a few times and that was it! It was a perfect heart shot. Clean and quick! It was only 3:15 and cool enough that we could leave it and continue to our stand to try to get a buck. We got to the stand and hopped up in. After about 20 minutes a flock of turkeys came in. They pecked around for a little and eased off. About 15 minutes later and nice buck came in from right to left. He was moving pretty fast so I couldn’t get a shot. We couldn’t tell for sure but it looked like a nice ten point. A little later a doe and two fawns came in from the same place. They came in and stayed around for a while. At about 5:15 Trev saw a buck coming in!! He got really exited and told me but I couldn’t find him. Finally I saw him. Tree ranged him with the range finder at 175 yards. He kept coming towards the doe so we let him get closer. Trev ranged him again at 145 yards. I told Trev to stop him, so he grunted at the buck. He stopped and I shot!! His back legs dropped right out from under him and he fell straight down!! I was pumped!! I shot him right through the spine!! I hit a little higher than where I aimed but it doesn’t matter to me!! We got out of the stand and made our way to where he was. We took some pictures and called my dad on the radio. He picked us up and we loaded my buck into the truck. We grabbed the doe on the way back and headed back to camp. Not bad for a day that started out with a miss!! I aged him at 5 1/2 and he scored 117 1/4 gross and 113 1/2 net!!

PS--watch the gun barrel in the second pic--not aimed at a good spot wink.gif

Well when i was cleaning him I was in a hurry because i had some other stuff to do so i cut to far up the breast bone and ruined the cape. frown.gifmad.gif So i decided to just cut the skin by his teeth and measure the tooth wear against an age chart.
