EIGHTPOINT
I looked at 3 guns today, Tikka T3 Lite .308, Ruger M77 MarkII .300 WSM & Remington 700 XCR .300 Ultra Mag. All these guns have syn. stocks an S.S. barrels. I kind of know which gun I may get but was wondering what the folks on this forum thought of each . It would be used mostly for a deer rifle but not owning any magnum calibers I may want a gun for a western type hunt some day .
fisherguy
Re: Decision about a new gun. I have been shoppin lately as well. I have avtually looked at all three, and handled them, but not shot them. Of the three i liked the look and feel of the tikka best, with the remington a close second. Personally i would be leaning towards the tikka in .308.

tped
Re: Decision about a new gun. You should give them more info. Tikka T3 lite Stainless various calibers $569 Ruger 77 Mark II Stainless various calibers $469 Remington 700BDL Stainless 300 Ultra Mag $549 All are NIB. Pesonally I think the Remington is the best buy there. **** for caliber for solely deer hunting I think the 308 would be fine but if you were to use the gun for larger game such as ELK, MOOSE, Bear and such to 300WSM or the Ultra Mag would be the better choice. The Tikka and Ruger can be had in 300WSM for the same money.

Guest ronin
Re: Decision about a new gun. I just sold a buddy the new Remington XCR in 270 WSM. This is one sweet rifle and I'm not a huge Remington fan. I would go for the XCR.
AJ
Re: Decision about a new gun. While the choice is up to the buyer, I would go with the Tikka. It's not mandatory to have a magnum chambered gun to hunt "out west". The 308 will kill deer, moose, bear, and such as well as a magnum will. Choose the proper bullet and hit where you are supposed to and its all over. Any of the guns will serve you well. It comes down to what do you want. Personally, I am not a Ruger 77 fan. I don't like the angled bedding screw and the variable tolerances of the Ruger. Just like anything else, some like them, some don't. The Rem XCR is vastly over rated. You can send any gun to be coated and its as good as their TriNyte™ coating. It still comes with a piece of crap injection molded stock. Ooohhhh, it has rubber overmolding technology from Hogue®. So they tried to polish a turd. Its still a turd. For $650-$700 there are better choices IMO.

There are a ton of guys up here who use a .308 for moose, deer, and bear with great success.
EIGHTPOINT
Re: Decision about a new gun. Thanks for all the imput guys but I'm going to sit on it for awhile. I was never one to be an impulse buyer.
tped
Re: Decision about a new gun. The Remington is not the XCR. It is the STandard 700 BDL Stainless Synthetic. I agree on the XCR - I had a dealer looking for one for me in 375 H&H before I saw one. Once I did - I changed my mind - I do not like the stock - finish is so-so. Now I'm back to basics looking for the Model 70 Classic Stainless for my 375. I may disagree with the 308. Yes , if you put the bullet where it is supposed to go it will do the job. Now put that trophy elk at about 300 yards and I'd prefer to have the magnum in my hands shooting a heavier bullet just a little quicker for some additional kinetic energy
LETMGROW
Re: Decision about a new gun. The Remington 700 Bdl Stainless is one sweet shooting piece. Pick one up, you will like it. My son has one in .270 with the DM. It won't miss!
Slugger
Re: Decision about a new gun. have you thought about looking at savage? thier upper end guns are really nice and that accutrigger is sweet. oh yeah i think their pretty accurate to as far as caliber i like .308 and 30-06 I sometimes lean toward thoughts that all the whammy boom boom cartriges are a bit over rated. mehunter
Re: Decision about a new gun. I have a Tikka in 270, and I absolutely love the gun. I have taken deer and bear with it, and even took a coyote at 322 yards. You won't be disappointed.
Guest ronin
Re: Decision about a new gun. IMO the stock is actually quite good. It fits well, the grip is great, and the Sims recoil pad is superb. I'm not sure about sending off a gun to be coated as after market work has never been an interest for me. Regardless, the time, effort and money spent to do the after market work would immediately make the factory coating more appealing and economical. As I mentioned before, I'm not a Remington fan and I would prefer a Savage accu-trigger package over most of the Remington guns. However, the XCR seems to be a well built, quality rifle. I think most people would be happy with it.
LETMGROW
Re: Decision about a new gun. I'd spend time with several choices and pick the one which best fits you. Don't base your purchase solely on somebody elses opinion. We are all shaped a little differently and what fits you might not be to my liking. It's your money. superguide
Re: Decision about a new gun. A Tikka T3 in .308 will kill any elk or moose as dead as they need to be.
wtnhunt
Re: Decision about a new gun. Would lean towards the .308 for the availabilty of a variety of ammo here locally. Have never shot a tikka, but have heard good things about them.
