Born2Hunt
Re: starting from scratch Anything is better than nothing. Not knowing your soil type or anything like that I would look into a clover chicory mix. Clover and chicory are high in protien and the deer will feed on clover all year long. Thayer
Re: starting from scratch You will need to do some research on the types of clover that flourish in your area...I can't help much, just plant in Missouri!
LETMGROW
Re: starting from scratch Check with your local USDA office. They may be able to steer you in the right direction.
dogdoc
Re: starting from scratch welcome to the forums. First off you need to decide where the best area is to establish your food plots. Then you need to get a few soil samples to see what your soil needs to start the food plots. I like to have about a 50-50 ratio of annual plots and perennial plots. Annuals are much easier to maintain as the perennials require future mowing and fertilization. Spring annuals include soybeans, cowpeas, sorghum, millet, sunflowers. Fall annuals include wheat, ryegrain, oats, vetch, austrian winter peas. My favorite perennials are clover, trefoil, alfalfa, and chicory. good luck todd

bowhtr1
Re: starting from scratch I might be able to help you out. I am from here and have been trying everything from A-Z over the years. Where are you in southeast La? I have a camp in Amite and one in Robert. I live in Ponchatoula. I am sure you want to plant summer and fall. If you can you will want 10 acres to plant. (10%) "Summer" Get the soil tested now. The sooner you start putting lime out the better off you will be. Plant American Joint Vetch mixed with alyce clover. Plant this in mid April. Use a 5-20-20 fertilizer. "Winter" Get some Mississippi Complete (Pennington Seed) and plant by September 1st. Use 13-13-13 for this. You will want to leave some of the Joint vetch up for fall because the deer will be hitting it hard. It will last through frost but a freeze will kill it. This makes a great bow stand. Leave some small spots where you can bow hunt over the vetch. This is the best for our area. Start some mineral sites ASAP. They wont start using them alot until summer but you want them to find them now. Use deer cain or you can make the blend on this site to make your own. Get some tripod feeders to get the deer use to coming in when the spiner goes off. Moultriefeeders.com has the proline series cheap. 69 and 89 dollars for the 15 and 30 gallon feeders. Welcome to the site. Let me know if you need anything else.
