arrow32
Went in town today and saw a dead deer on the side of the road without its head. I dont think thats right maybe its just me but why would you want to take the head off somthing you or someone else hit? Thats more than likly one reason why anti hunters view us as not doing the right things and it jsut being about killing things.
Squirrelhunter91
Re: Road side kill I think it's fine as long as its legal.. I know plenty of people who drive around with a saw specifically looking for roadkilled deer. The meat is no good anymore so why not honor the animal by taking the antlers and possibly having it mounted?
arrow32
Re: Road side kill Ok im not saying its all wrong im just saying they could at least move it off the road some that way people arent seeing a dead deer there. So dont take me wrong on that i might have made it sound like there stupid. lol
Guest gfourhunter
Re: Road side kill yep. no sence in letting the antlers go if the meet is bad. some people make alot of money making knife handels and other stuff with antlers. just like shed hunting. i didnt shoot the deer but i sure will pick it up if i find it. i do call the sheriff and let them know where it is so they can do something with it. Tominator
Re: Road side kill Never have hit a deer, (knocking on wood), but if I ever did, I don't care if it had antlers or not, it's going into the bed of the truck. Antlers are captivating for sure, I guess that's why people take them. Around here, you're supposed to get a tag if you want to keep the antlers legal. I'd guess well over 90% of them are illegal. too_pointer
Re: Road side kill I have picked up 2 deer in my lifetime. 1 I hit, another one was extremely fresh, didn't want that good meat to go to waste too_
spyderpancake
Re: Road side kill i saw a little button buck today beside the road. My grandaddy saw a doe get hit once and finished it off with a .22, then brought it over for us to clean it. We skinned it and thought it would be fine, but once we started to gut it we had to stop. It was complete soup on the inside. We ended up just keeping the hams.
stevebeilgard
Re: Road side kill when the deer is struck, the meat is bruised. a bruise is blood in the meat. in short, the meat of a car hit deer may not be edible. or legal. IowaDeerHunter
Re: Road side kill I suppose if someone found a dead buck, that was no good anymore except the rack. Thay could cut the head off, but atleast throw it in the ditch or somewhere where it isn't so noticable without a head.
HitRmisS
Re: Road side kill i would do it if it was legal, here you have to call the warden if you want the meat then they have the option of giving it to you or giving it to charity based on there discrepancy sp? they normally they do not give the horns away to anyone because they do not want to condone hitting them with your vehicle intentionally....at least this is wgat a warden told me
elkhntnfool
Re: Road side kill Here in Montana if you take a road killed animal or any part of that animal i.e antlers or meat. You can and will be charged with poaching. I have hit three deer includeing a really nice 5x5 that I had to leave on the side of the road what a waste aspecilly when they cause $3000.00 in damage to your truck and you can't even keep the meat. JimT
Re: Road side kill I dont see a problem with taking them. Antlers look nice no matter how you got them. Maybe they are going to use them to rattle or something?
wtnhunt
Re: Road side kill The morning I took my daughters deer to the taxidermist we saw a jeep on the side of the road about a mile away from the house as a crow flies. I had heard some rifle shots that morning during the muzzleloader hunt, and thought the jeep there was odd and was tempted to get the tag number, but could not see it the way the jeep was parked on the side fo the road. On the way back that jeep was gone, and about a mile down the road from where it sat was a mutilated deer, with the head missing. My assumption is that a poacher whacked it and left the body behind and it then got ran over in the road. You just dont ever know about roadkill. Here it is legal to take roadkill and keep it so long you contact the TWRA. As far as the antlers or head from a roadkill deer, people have shed they find mounted, I guess if you hit a deer or find a really nice one dead in the road and wanted to have the antlers to look at why not.
