billygoat
To those who are more educated than I: I bought my 870 for the purpose of deer hunting- so it is matched up with a rifled slug barrel w/ cantelever mount. Recently, I decided that I will try Turkey hunting in the spring and rather than purchase another gun, I figured I could match up my 870 with a turkey barrel... so I need some suggestions. Thanks all!
AJ
Re: Turkey Barrel for Rem 870 Express Mag Yep, just get a new barrel and choke and you are good to go. Like run and shoot said, you can get great results with a standard smoothbore barrel. Just pick what length you want. I like 28" barrels. They give great patterns, decent velocity, and move the blast farther away from the shooter. Shorter barrels are a little easier to handle in tight cover, but I have not found even 30" barrels to be too difficult to use. As for a choke, there are a lot of popular chokes these days. Grab some ammo and you are ready to head to the patterning board. Shotguns are like rifles, you have to find the right combination for your barrel and choke. lil hunter
Re: Turkey Barrel for Rem 870 Express Mag I'd say just get a smoothbore 26-28 inch barrel. I think they come with a modified choke. You can buy a nice turkey choke of your choice, Then you will have a deer gun, a turkey gun, and you could use the modified choke for many other things as well. LETMGROW
Re: Turkey Barrel for Rem 870 Express Mag The Remington barrels with interchangeable chokes is by far your best bet. At least you know they will fit properly. There are a lot of turkey choke options out there to select from. The Remington extra full with #4 shot works well for me. Guest cowpoke
Re: Turkey Barrel for Rem 870 Express Mag Billygoat, Did you get the barrel needs figured out? A few thoughts... If your shotgun has the Monte Carlo stock you will likely want to get the barrel with the open sights and the remchoke for better eye/ sight alignment. If your shotgun has the regualr style stock, then you have a couple options... either the above mentioned barrel and see how it fits or get a regualr vent rib barrel either 21 or 26 inches from Remington and those can have tru-glo sights added aftermarket if you so choose. The longer barrel will be somewhat less noisy than the shorter one, but with 3 inch mags, it may be hard to tell.
