need2hunt
I know you all have to have a few of those burnt into your minds, those shots you can see over and over again by just shutting your eyes. Let's hear a few, here's a couple of mine from SD... We were hunting a field and had approx 15 guys in the group, I was the far right walker on the line. A bird got up and the next guy over to my left shot it and it fell to the right of me in a picked sunflower field. the line stopped as I went over to retrieve it, got it in my vest and as I'm standing up I hear the blockers on the left side of the field starting to yell ROOSTER, ROOSTER... I look up and see a flock of birds coming across the field straight at me. First three were roosters and I went Bang, Miss, Bang, Miss, Bang, Miss - more birds still coming, hurry up and throw a shell in and Bang, Miss - There's still a ton of birds flying my way and I say screw it and let them fly by while I take my time and reload my gun... Once I was ready i looked up and had 3 more roosters coming in fast - Bang, Drop, Bang, Drop, Bang, Drop - It was the first triple I have ever shot in my life (and so far the only one) Also in SD we were hunting a cane field (I hate cane fields ) that was on a hill, to the right of the field was a steep drop off and at the bottom a pond. I was at the bottom of the hill right next to the pond. I heard some shooting coming from off the top and saw 2 roosters approx 15 feet appart come flying off the top of the hill. Bang, Bang, nailed them both but the thing that is stuck in my mind is that I hit them the same and they both cartwheeled tail-over-head all the way down into the pond - sincrinized falling, it was cool. ok that's just a couple of mine, what about you? Tominator
Re: Favorite Shots... I could reply to this forever! A few that come to mind. One was when I was 18 or so, and I was on a preserve hunt with my dad and uncles. We had a bird go up that was easily 50 yards out, crossing left to right. Nobody even raised their gun, except me of course. I dropped him with one shot. My dad and uncle were pretty impressed, as was I, but in hind sight, that's one of the luckiest shots I've ever pulled off. Another one that comes to mind is the last time I went to a preserve. My buddy's brother had a bunch of clients out for a hunt and invited us along. Steve and I were told to be "back up" to the clients. In other words, we weren't allowed to shoot first, and could only shoot if they missed. That was fine by me, I got to walk around for free and shoot birds. That was just a magical day for my buddy Steve and I as we couldn't miss that day, and the clients were horrible. I think we ended up shooting over 25 birds, I missed one bird all day, and that shot was well over 40 yards as I was way on the other end when the bird went up. Steve and I shot 3 birds at the exact same time. Funny we both retrieved those birds thinking we had shot them only to find out we both shot at the exact same time. But the one shot that day that I will always remember was the chuckar I dropped. There was another party hunting the property to the west of us. Well, a chuckar went up and they shot at it, peppering me. , I ducked, popped my head up and noticed the chuckar flying towards me with a stiff wind at his tail, he was flat out moving. Well as I popped up from being peppered I was a little miffed to say the least, so I brought the gun up, swung on it, and dropped it with one shot. Might be one of the best shots I ever put on a bird. I can't tell you how satisying it was to pick up their bird (free to me), and stick it in my vest. Texan_Til_I_Die
Re: Favorite Shots... Last September I was dove hunting in West Texas. We had hunted a sunflower field until about 6:30 then decided to head over to a pond to finish up the day. I got out of the Jeep and loaded my over/under. Just then a dove came rocketing through the mesquite trees about 15 feet from me. I snapped up and shot the dove through a small gap in the limbs. AND, that was with the full choke barrel! I was thinking that I'd find the bird totally mangled, but when I walked over and picked it up, I had shot it's head off! Of course, I immediately turned around and told my buddies that I had intended to shoot the bird in the head!! For some reason, they said it was pure luck? M00N
Re: Favorite Shots... I remember my first squirrel hunt where we treed a squirrel up this extremely tall thick tree. It sat only peeking it's head over the limb at me chattering away. Dad told me if I think I can hit it to take a shot. So I waited a bit and kicked a stick near me and the squirrel popped it's head just a tad more up over the limb to watch the stick that moved and "BAM" I let one loose on it with my 410 shotgun. Next thing I see the squirrel tried to turn around to run up the tree farther but just wobbled around and then ended up hanging upside down on the branch trying to keep it's grip. It hung there for awhile but one by one each of it's paws lost grip on the branch until it came tumbling about 25 feet to the ground with a big crash in a pile of leaves. It ended up I had 2 pellets in it's head. It just was very determined to stay up in his tree and survive, but the shots got the better of him eventually. Hillbilly
Re: Favorite Shots... I remember rabbit hunting with a few friends of mine in a meadow. A rabbit busted out of a creek bottom and was heading out of distance. I pullled up the gun and shot one time and rolled the rabbit. The friends I was hunting with saw me shoot the rabbit and judged the shot to be around 30 yards.
MossySNPR
Re: Favorite Shots... I was out grouse hunting two winters ago and it had been a slow day. I was out for about 2 hours on the four wheeler, just putting along a trail, shotgun in lap and shell in hand. I had seen lots of ruffies on this trail in the off season but there was just nothing today. As I got around a corner, two birds fly across the trail 10 yards in front of me in opposite directions. The adrenaline started to flow as I threw the shell in my gun and grabbed another from my gun belt and loaded that too. Before the 4wheeler had lurched to a stop, I had made a second glance as to where they landed and both were in sight. BANG, one was in a small tree, dropped it. Turned around to the other side of the trail, the other was walking away from me, BANG, off with its head. I feel so good as I get up to go grab the one bird on my right when I see another running away! Load one up, walk a bit down the trail, bending down to see it in the bushy pines, BANG, he's floppin' around in the underbrush. Now I go to get him because hes going nuts and one flies from my right again while I'm in the woods and lands in a small tree. OMG MAN! I load up another and BANG, dropped. Now I don't have MILLIONS of birds in my area here, just a decent population and this was really cool. Must have all happened in 30-50 seconds.
