Re: caliber selection 270 win/ 30.06 / 7mm mag

I see you are from NY so I'm assuming that you'll mostly be hunting whitetails. With a trip out west for elk, maybe a moose hunt in Canada, black bears all on the list. All 3 will work. But when you add elk, moose, bears-----I would start to lean towards either the 30/06 or 7Mag. The 270 will work & has worked but IMO a larger bullet is better for the bigger game. Now out of the those 2---I like the 30/06-----several reasons ammo is everywhere & there in an unlimited variety of factory ammo, bullet weights & types. Plus you can also jump up to HE ammo which pushes it up to 300 Win Mag class. Plus you will always find it on sale---no so true about the 7Mag.

I looked at all three when I was buying my mine. I picked the 06, never has let me down & that was 35 years ago.

[ QUOTE ]

need some caliber selection input......

.270 Win./ 30.06 / 7mm mag /

which is the flattest, hardest hitting, bullet ??

going to purchase a rifle in one of these. help appreciated..... thanks

[/ QUOTE ]

I believe the 30.06 hits the hardest of the 3 because its a fatter bullet.

The .270 & 7mm shoot flatter with the 7mm shooting the flatest & of course it hits harder than the .270 at longer ranges.

I own all 3 caliburs & all are fine for anything from moose to antelope.

Bears I'd go with the 06. The thing about the 06 is that you can get 200 & 220 grain a frame & bear claw bullets & they'll penetrate & drop darn near anything. Alot of African animals are killed with a 30.06.

Tell us what your going to use it for. Deer only? Deer and other game? All of the above advice is good and well intended. I read once that you should buy a rifle based on what type of game you hunt ALL (Every year) of the time, not what you might hunt one day if all works out. I think that that advice is dead on! So tell us, what is this gun/caliber going to be used for?

.270 would be the flattest shooting one.

[/ QUOTE ]

Are you 100% sure about that? crazy.gif All my research shows the 7 mag being the fastest of the 3.

Here's my opinion though....I personally think you would be able to shoot the .06 or the .270 better, because that 7 mag does kick, and you will flinch. I don't care how big of a man you are, it will get to you, even though 90% of shooters will deny the recoil bothers them.

What's 200 FPS anyway? A couple inches at a few hundred yards?

Re: caliber selection 270 win/ 30.06 / 7mm mag

This is kind of a bogus question. More data is necessary to determine the answers. Giving what you requested the answers are:

The 30-06 Accelerator is the flattest. No question about it. A 55 gr bullet going 4060 fps tops the others.

The hardest hitting is the 30-06 with its 220 gr round nosed bullet.

Any of them will work just fine for deer and bear. Deer are not bulletproof. You do not need artillery to kill them. If you want to step up to elk, they will all work but the 30-06 and 7mm Mag start to pull ahead.

Personally I am not a big fan of the 270 and I absolutely love the 7 mag so that would be a no brainer for me. Some of the best shooting guns I have owned over the years have been 7 mags and I have always had tremendous success with them on deer & elk using 160 grain nosler partition bullets.

The other issue to consider is bullet selection. Caliber is important, however, bullet performance is critical. There is a lot of bullets to choose from and not all of them are created equal.

My background is law enforcement and I spent considerable time researching terminal ballistic performance coupled with street experience. The bottom line was that all bullets can kill, however, certain bullets were far more effective at it.

Any of the calibers you mentioned are great. I'd simply choose a properly charged great bullet to go along with it.

I'll bet if you look closely your gonna see that the '06 is gonna win the "vote" here....

That's the reaction I got here anyway, and everywhere else I asked.......Not that I go to other forums or anything....J/K..

I bought an '06.......

A good do all, kill anything I'll ever shoot at caliber....

Gotta love the .06. A true mouse to moose gun. You can go from 55-220 grain and take most anything on the continent. (for the grizzlies I don't reccomend it though)
