Swamphunter
Re: new climber Depends..if you are an archery hunter, definitely one with an open front. I have the Summit Cobra XLS which they do not make anymore but you can get them used. They have replaced it with another open front model though (I can't think of the name..maybe bushmaster or something??), anyways you can also opt for the type that have the shooting rail and foot rest. Remember though, yes they are comfy with the shooting rail and footrest, but this is added weight. Consider your packing in and out. I sit anywheres from 3-7 hours at a time in my Cobra and am very happy with it. The only thing I did was ask for the foot stirrups and the side bags for Christmas. brownie65
Re: new climber I have a Goliath X5. I really like it. I use it for bowhunting. The closed front has never bothered any shot. Very comfortable stand & I like the cable system. I have the climbing stirrups on mine. They are great. I had a Grand Slam Magnum Supreme before this stand. It got stolen that is the only reason I got the Summit. I was getting another Grand Slam but they didn't have any so I got the Summit. The Grand Slam had a bigger seat. The metal frame was wider, the foot platform is also bigger. I was very comfortable in it while in the tree. It has a chain setup for going around the tree. The Summit cable system is way better. Don't get me wrong, I am plenty comfortable in the Summit in the tree. I can sit in it all day. Grand Slam just had a little more room. The Grand Slam was very heavy,I do like the lighter weight of the Summit better. I like the cable system, the climbing stirrups better on the Summit. Only thing I really liked better about he Grand Slam was the bigger frame & seat. The Goliath is Summits biggest stand for the larger hunter. But if you look at the specs it is only a 1"-1 1/2" wider than other Summit models. They use the same seats on all of their standard models, there are exceptions, example the one that you can sit facing or away from the tree has a different seat I think but their basic stands all have the same seats. I was worried about the seat frame being wide enough when it got cold & I had coveralls & stuff on. It seemed to be ok. But with the wider frame also comes added weight. Anyway, I like both stands very much. If I was going to buy another one I would get the Summit Goliath X5 again.
