Re: first time goin out by myself...

Travelling in woods is always scary, cause you never know what is out there. Just remember that you're armed - keep your arrow nocked and keep looking behind you, but not too long cause then there might be something in front of you.

Once you get in the stand it should be ok - unless there is a racoon or something in the tree that you climb and when the racoon is coming down they have no choice but to scratch and bite anything in its way.

Only when the sun come up are you safe and realize that there isn't anything in the woods anymore cause they all ran away when they heard your heart beating so loudly and soft whimpering cries of the cat that roams the forest - the scaredy cat.

LOl Just kidding. Walking in the woods can be unnerving - there's no doubt, just remember that there isn't anything in the woods that isn't afraid of you - its always easier when there is a full moon and snow on the ground.

I'd check your local game laws before carrying a firearm into the woods with you during archery season. It is illegal here in NY.

If I am not mistaken, it is illegal here as well!

Yeah, leave the .22 at home. No sense risking getting arrested just because of a little fear.

Hey, say a little prayer before you go in to the woods Kyle. Ask the Lord to give you peace and comfort, so you won't be scared, and don't be afraid to use your flash-light. Once your in your stand, you'll feel a lot better too.

Remember, that most wild critters would sooner run from a human, than get too close. They're just as scared of you, as you are of them. wink.gif

Re: first time goin out by myself...

I remember the first time I tried going into the woods in the dark by myself.

I started in on a trail that I was aboslutely sure was the way into my stand...somehow I got turned around along the way and did not know where I was.

I sat down and waited for daylight to find my stand.

Whats different today than back then???

I carry 2 flashlights, a compass, and a Garmin GPS wink.gif

I'm sure you will make the right decision one way or another. I hope you get to enjoy the feeling of the woods coming to life and full of hope. That feeling of having done so by yourself is very fulfilling to say the least. Enjoy the Hunt!!!

Be Safe no matter what else!

Make sure someone knows exactly where you are and when you will either report in to them by phone or be back home.

You can always wait until its just starting to get gray out and then stalk your way to your stand.

Re: first time goin out by myself...

I am not kidding things can and do happen, I have been hunting 30 years now and trust me If you go where nast critters live you will find them sooner or later Ok the big foot pic's a joke LOL But you do live in cat country Just fight back don't let them get the back of your neck. If they do get you well at least you went out with your boots on.

Re: first time goin out by myself...

If your scared of a cat getting you, wear a mask on the back of your head. It looks like a face. Cats won't attack face on. You might look goofy walking in the woods, but it seems to work for the folks in India against the tigers. LOL Bears, play dead and hope for the best. LOL Pigs, use the swing out method. LOL Skenks, run the other way LMBO> As for just being scared of the dark and strange sounds in the woods, just keep going and it get easier each time. wink.gif

Well, think of this. You have a weapon, and there's not much out there that can hurt you. All of the predators in Ohio, and I'm guessing most, if not all, predators in your area too, would rather run that fight.

Why not wait until it gets a little light out? You won't miss much.

Re: first time goin out by myself...

Anybody else remember a few months ago, someone posted a link to another forum? It was a thread of spooky stories about bein' in the woods.

I made the mistake of reading all of them the day before the bow season opener.....

I will admit that I was somewhat "spooked" going into the woods that morning.

Re: first time goin out by myself...

I have been bowhunting for 8 years now and have been bowhunting our own private land for 4 years now, I have hunted this land and know it like the back of my hand, in the light that is, when it is dark out that is a whole new story. I have a hard time distiguising what is whatas far as where I am going, I still get "scared" mostly nervous but just take it slow, if you have to wait til light to get to your stand, I have don't that plenty of times. Also I find it really helpful to look at a topo map of where you are going so you can walk right to that spot no problem! Good Luck, you'll do fine!

I usually carry a nice sharp machete (I think that is how you spell it) when i during bow season and when it is the general season I take my 45 acp just incase. And beleive me you hear some weird things out there in the morning or after dark.

Re: first time goin out by myself...

leave the .22 at home...probably illega anyway.

Take a good flashlight and a back up or two (Mini Mags are great, low cost back ups).

You will be fine. The worst thing that you have to fear is falling down or tripping over something and getting hurt. Take your time and watch your step.

We all could do better by not watching all those horror movies...it gets us all worked up in the dark woods.

Oh yeah....watch out for ....bigfoot, heilamonsters, jackalopes, Jason, Freddie, Chuckie, etc.
