Cold weather squirrel tips

I'm planning to go out this afternoon with the .22 after some squirrels and I'm looking for some suggestions as to how to hunt the squirrels. I never seem to have as much luck in the winter as in the fall. It has been snowing off and on, in the upper 30s I think. I usually see the tracks but never the squirrels and I'm thinking of just sitting near hemlocks where I usually see them, for a half hour or so at a time then moving. Any tips?

Re: Cold weather squirrel tips

well went hunting squirrels i normally find it best to go in the woods early boefre they come out and go sit in an area that you know has a good number of squirrels. the sit and wait. a .22 is best for this type of hunting but a 20 ga will work too.when you see a squirrel moving in the trees dont move or youll alert it. if the squirrel is cutting nuts on the other hand you can move all around the bottom of the tree for the best shot and he wont notice you.

if i squirrel dose notice you they will bark and there are a few diffrent barks you have to listen for. some are very fait and others quite loud and they have diffrent tones too between younger and older squirrels.

lately i have founf my 20 ga to be the best choice for huntig the tree rats. i have found walking around and finding squirrels to be the best method of hunting for my area. if you do this be quick on your shots or you migh loose a squirrel. and you will loose some no matter what of they get into a old hollow den tree they are safe and you ant get them out.

as far as finding squirrels goes. look for tracks if ther is snow, holes that they have dug in the ground, cut hickory nuts, walnuts, beach nuts, acorns or what ever kind of nuts you have in the area you hunt. in the winter they also like to eat pine cones when not many other nuts are avalible. so hunting pine trees might be a good idea.

just listen for the barks, the sound of a squirrel cutting nuts or nuts droping from the trees, listen movement in the trees, and their claws clibing on the bark when they climb a tree.

most of all be safe ,have fun, kill alo of squirrels and good luck to you.

EDIT - i forgot to say that when you walk in the woods stop and listen/look for squirrels every so often you have a better chance of seeing one before it sees you if you do this.

that and sorry about my bad grammar.

good luck with the tree rat hunting

Re: Cold weather squirrel tips

Listen for barks. So far this year thats how ive had all my luck. Last time i went which was two or three weeks ago i know a long time been busy deer hunting. It was snowing and i just watched the nest about 2 hours before dark and finally they always seem to make there way out of em. Got one cause i was able to get a good shot by moving while it was messin with a nut. Good luck.
