fisherguy
Well I was going to go walleye fishing today, but had a change of plans at the last minute. I have not missed the Jan 1, lake trout opener in 20 years(since I was three) lol, but I will be on the road heading to a job interview this year. Splake are open now, and I decided to go for them to sort of take the pain out of missing the lake trout opener. It was a cloudy day, but only -2, as opposed to the normal -20 for now. Two of us got there at 8 am, as usual had the entire lake to ourselves, and set our 2 lines each. Within two hours we had kept 7 decent fish, and thrown back about 10. We decided to get picky and not keep the last 3 for a limit unless they were over 16 inches. In another hour we had two just over 16, one just under 19, and tossed back about a dozen from 12-15 inches. Not bad, well over 30 fish in about three hours. Not exactly 5-25 pound lake trout, but they sure eat well. These things are just like salmon. mmmm I tried to take a couple pictures while the colours were fresh but they did not show up really well in the light conditions. Just take my work if you have never seen one, these things have every colour of the rainbow on them. Here is our limit of 10, they go from about 12 inches to just under 19. fisherguy
Re: Great day ice fishing! Speckled trout, lake trout hybrid. They have most of the colouration of a brook trout, the flesh colour of a brook trout, but hav a bit of a fork in the tail, and grow bigger due to the lake trout genes. Last year a buddy caught one just under 10 pounds in another lake.

fisherguy
Re: Great day ice fishing! [ QUOTE ] Great day for sure! I take it you jig for them? [/ QUOTE ] In theory, we jig one line, and leave the other set with a jig and minnow just above the bottom. Most of the time the fish seem to bite the line we are not jigging so now i just set both and sit back and watch.
