200 yard scope ???????

Yep............Handgunners got my feathers ruffled................ and I'm going to have to get a 460.

Here's my question...........I planned on finding the "right" scope first, something in the 2-7power range.

I found that most handgun scopes are parallax adjusted at 50-60 yards. What effect will this have when trying to dial in 150 yard zero????????????

I see that Burris makes a 3-12 that's Parallax Adjustable.................

I just seems that most handgun scopes are built for the trajectory of a .44...........are there going to be issues with the .460 and it's trajectory when it comes to chosing glass?????????????

Just Wondering

Re: 200 yard scope ???????

Dont know about all that but I do read that there are several folks using that 3-12x32 Burris in Ballistic Plex and shooting deer at well over 200 yards.

This is with various calibers too.

2-7 Burris should do about the same I would think.

But this is just from reading about it, I have yet to do it.

I am getting a 3-12x32 Burris in Fine Plex and will let ya know once I put mine on the bench.

To dang cold in VT to even think about bench work right now. LOL

Good Luck!

Re: 200 yard scope ???????

I don't personally feel having a scope with an adjustable objective lens to be any benefit on a hunting gun. Not enough to justify any extra cost anyway. With the ranges you'll be shooting and size of the animals you'll be shooting at there won't be enough optical error (assumnig a good quality scope) to cause a miss.

With that said.......

If you keep a keen eye on sites like eBay you can still find used scopes with the adjustable objectives. I just recently picked up a minty 3X for a decent price.

I installed a Burris 2X-7X with the Ballistic Plex reticle on my 460. This reticle has hash marks for different elevations. With some proper range work you will be able to know the exact zero of the hash marks with the load you're using. This will allow a much more precise sighting on a target over the guesstimation method.

chart3.gif

Using the chart above you see they are showing the hash marks as the amount of hold over needed for the bullet to impact where you want it. They aren't showing that you have to know the bullet weight and velocity to be able to use the marks. They do supply you with an assortment of charts when you buy a new scope. If you use factory ammo or your reloaded ammo is represented by one of the generic charts you should be close on the accuracy of the chart. I'll have to spend some time at the range after I find a suitable load to be able to know where my bullet will impact using the hash marks.

Re: 200 yard scope ???????

I'm just trying to test the waters...............

I'm thinking about going to the "Performance Center" to get a good one, and the question seemed logical to me. I'm just an old bow-hunter who doesn't let an arrow fly unless I know where it's going, kind of like my old trusty .22....about the same range.

As long as I'm "throwing" $1200 at a gun.........let's find the right glass.

Jim,

If I were you I'd go with a Burris 2X-7X. If you want to pick a day when we can meet half way I'll let you give mine a once over to give you an idea of what you're getting into.

Gonna go with one of the PC guns eh.....

I may yet end up with one of the 10.5" barreled PC guns...... grin.gif

I am thinking of buying the THOMPSON CENTER ONCORE version of the 460 what diffrence do you think there would be as to a revolver model.

[/ QUOTE ]

I gotta think the 460 in an Encore might not too much fun. I would expect 150-200fps gain (maybe more) over a revolver. I' seem to remember seeing someone post up velocity in the 2700fps neighborhood shooting the Hornady 200gr load. I can't think you'll see that much of an increase but who knows. That's a full 500fps higher than the revolver. The weight of the Encore is less than the Smith revolver so felt recoil will be more.

As far as which scope to use.......same one.
