Here's the deal... I have a chance to trade my 5+ year old Remington 7600 .30-.06 plus $200.00 cash for a Browning .270 Bolt Action with the stainless barrel and composite stock (The 270 is NEW) is this a good deal ??? or am I being suckered ??

Im quite anxious about this deal, I've always wanted a 270, and especially a bolt action....but I don't want to jump the gun so to speak and make a hasty deal....

Any advice or opinions ??

Sooooooo Glad you jumped on that deal!

You needed a rifle that can reach out a bit further.

Especially the fields I know your hunting over.

Congrats on a fine gun.

Now about that scope.......... crazy.gifsmirk.gifwink.gif

I'll buy ya one if you promise to hold your breathe until it arrives.

Your scope will do fine.

I just hate to see an inexpensive scope on a $700+ gun.

Seems sacreligious (sp) crazy.gifsmirk.gifwink.gif

You would like my JP Enterprises flattop AR15 then. It has a Simmons 44 Mag. Its a $1500 gun with a $99 scope. Then there is my Knight .45 ML which was a $250 gun with a Monarch 5.5-16x44 on top. It all balances out in the end. Whats the big deal? grin.gif

Re: Browning .270 Bolt Action

Shawn was just razzing me as usual AJ... grin.gifwink.gif

He's in the same boat as me,, He understands and knows that we have to use what we have to the best of it's ability, and hope for something better down the road.... wink.gif

The Tasco World Class scope was a gift from the wife as was the rifle but they both suited my needs and have taken deer and other game, I rather like the Tasco line of scopes even tho they aren't a high end scope they get the job done... cool.gifwink.gif

Re: Browning .270 Bolt Action

Oh yeah, that's what I gathered Luke. When you guys from the Great White North get snowed in during wintertime, things get a little different. tongue.gif

I agree that some of the Tasco World Class scopes work just fine. I have a few of them on varmint guns and they have performed flawlessly. They were the older made in Japan models though. I am not sure where the modern versions are made.

Re: Browning .270 Bolt Action

Congratulations on the great deal! Use the scope you have until you can get one better. I use Simmons, Tasco and such on some of my rifles that I would not be using for serious hunting. My serious hunting guns (ones that I would take on trips that I am spending hard earned cash on) all carry Nikons and Leupolds. The lower end lines work fine for varmints and conditions here in PA.

Now all I need from AJ is what load he recommends, I usually only sight in at 100 yrds. should I go beyond that ??? if so how far ???

I do have some fields that I hunt over that are quite large.. ( and I do mean large.... grin.gif)

Well, since i don't have a .270 Winchester, I can not really recommend a single load. If it were me, I would look at the 130 and 140 gr bullets. There is about 1" difference between the two at 400 yards, so they are pretty much equal with trajectory and energy. Pick the one that shoots best for you. Some popular powders for the .270 Win are Hodgdon 4831SC and Alliant's Reloader 22.

Shooting a 130 Ballistic Tip at 3100 fps, zeroed 2" high at 100 yards will give you:

50 yards = +0.75"

100 yards = +2.0"

150 yards = +2.2"

200 yards = +1.3"

250 yards = -1.0"

300 yards = -4.3"

325 yards = -6.5"

350 yards = -9.2"

375 yards = -12.2"

400 yards = -15.6"

That will allow you to hold on fur out to 350 yards. As you can see, shooting much past that range estimation gets critical quickly.

Of course if you plan to shoot at these distances, I suggest you practice at long range (over 250 yards). The numbers I gave are theoretical. The BC of a bullet will change with weather and humidity changes. Shoot on paper to find out how your load performs first hand and go from there.
