Torn Meniscus

About 3 1/2 weeks ago, while climbing down a tree with my Summit broadhead backpacker...the platform got stuck....as I was wiggling to get it free, I got a super sharp pain in my left knee. Felt like I was stabbed. It hurt a second and it went away.

The next day my knee was like a football it was so swollen... I dealt with it for a week and a half, and could take it any more, so I went to the Dr. She sent me to an orthopedic surgeon, who scheduled an MRI.

Got the results from the MRI today. " Acute Medial Meniscus Tear". Dr says only way to deal with it is surgery. Gonna try to hold off untill deer season is over, if I can. I have only gotten out 2 times in the past 4 weeks now. Hoping to be able to get out during shotgun and ml'er .

Here is my question... He told me the operation is simple. It arthoscopic, and they just remove the torn piece of meniscus, and I should be able to be back to work in 3 to 7 days.

Has anyone here had this operation? Is it realistic to be able to be back on my feet in a week? I'm just curious. Anyone have any input on this?

Thanks in advance guys.

Re: Torn Meniscus

i have had it but in combination with ligiment damage, and some more serious cartilage damage. It tok me a ot longer to heal, but i had fairly major problems with both knees. A friend had miniscal tears, and he was fine about 4 days after teh surgery. SHouldn't be a big deal, and recovery should be fast.

Re: Torn Meniscus

The arthroscopic repair, providing the damage is limited to the meniscus, as the MRI indicates, is rather simple. They will make 3 very small incisions (1/4") and insert 3 seperate tools (a camera, suction, and scalple/cauterizer). The operation will take anywhere from 45 minutes to 2 hours depending on the degree of damage and required repair, they will use a general or local anesthetic. It is generally well tolerated and you should be able to return to work in 3-5 days. You will also go home same day of procedure. Don't hold off on the pain medication, the best way to control the pain is to prevent it from occuring... Hope your back in the tree soon, best of luck.

No, I have never had this operation. But I had an operation that completely replaced my ACL which is alot bigger surgery. But after my operation, the first thing they wanted me to do when I woke up was to walk on it. Walking on it and getting your range of motion will help it out. You should be on your feet in no time....it just might take a little while for it to get back to normal.

Re: Torn Meniscus

Thanks for the input guys. I'm gonna try and put it off until the end of January, or beginning of February, so i can get in as much hunting as I can. Not sure how much thats gonna be. The past week my knee has been hurting me pretty good. Can't wait to get it over with, but just hate to not be able to hunt too.

Re: Torn Meniscus

I can relate to the locked knee...about hald the time i bend my knee it locks up, and i have to massage it, or slowly stretch it to get it to unlock. It's just strange, because some days it feels real good, like today,(sat in a treestand for 4 hours, and it never bothered me) but the past week has been murder.
