Guest Defcon15
Okay everyone, I am about to rant about something that happened at our weekend farm. So, my dad and I decided to drive down to our farm for the night to do a little hunting. We arrived at our property at about 3:00 pm, and I immediately drove to my stand. However, as I was driving across one of our pond dams, I saw a brown and white blob at the far end of the pond. Well, I got out of my car, looked through my binoculars, and finally concluded that it was a dead deer floating in the water. Deciding that I would go back after the afternoon hunt, I continued toward my stand. So, I sit in my stand all afternoon--see nothing. After dark, I head back to the lake, grab the canoe, and paddle out to the deer. Well, I shine my flashlight down into the water and see one antler (which I originally think has 3 points) and the other side looked as if it had shed an antler. Without touching the deer, I went back to shore, got my dad, and we went back out. Well, long story short, when we eventually pulled the deer out, it actually had 5 points on one side. AND, *CLIMAX* *CLIMAX* -- a bullet hole straight through him behind his shoulder right below his spine. This pond is in the center of 360 acres, so this deer was definitely shot on our land. The deer turned out to be a deer I have been watching for a few years and have passed multiple times to let him grow--he only had 2 more weeks of the season--and was poached...made me sick. I know that this is not an isolated event cause we constantly see tire tracks, footprints, etc. Does anyone have any advice for us? Or, is it not worth taking any action. *Side note*--The second antler popped off when trying to pull it ashore, do y'all think he was shedding or could sitting in water loosen the antlers...remember, one had already fallen off. Thanks for letting me rant, and any advice would be great.
MCH
Re: INFURIATING--Anything to do?? Hate to hear stories like that. You can notify you're local game warden and ask him for advice. Maybe he'll pay more attention to your area. Also, the buck was probably in the process of shedding his antlers. The pulling and tugging just sped up the process. hutchies
Re: INFURIATING--Anything to do?? Yep, Notify your local game warden. I called mine the other day. I was at my mother in laws working on her busted water piped. It sounded like a war zone for about 15 seconds then I could hear them yelling and congratulating each other. I hit the ground when the shooting began. Long story short game warden came out within about 15 minutes but they were gone. He called me the next evening and told me he was setting up his decoy and if I heard anymore shooting call him immediately cause he was gonna be out there waiting on them to show up. rockefeller66
Re: INFURIATING--Anything to do?? here in IA they are starting to loosen up their horns, I would definately do something about that, maybe watch your land more or ask some neighbors if they have heard any gun shots or anyone on the land. We just turned in a huge poaching opperation that has been going on on and around our land, caught 8 people who have been poaching in KS, NC, and IA for years. FSU_Seminole
Re: INFURIATING--Anything to do?? Hey man don't feel bad. This past Monday I was sitting up in my deer stand when some idiots came crashing through the woods and into my field near my food plots on 4 wheelers. DIDN'T EVEN think to look at me in my stand or stop & think hey I'm on someone's land. Actually it happened twice & when I got down they went down the road and never came back. 2 weeks ago someone shot a racoon & threw it in my food plot. You got idiots out there!!!! Just try & get the game warden to watch your place. Sorry to hear about the poaching.

Drive by there from time to time and look for vehicle, get plate numbers and turn them in.
deerslayer2295
Re: INFURIATING--Anything to do?? Make sure that your property is properly posted, ask your local game officers if they will patrol your property for any trespassers, and last thing put out some of those trail cameras where you have seen the tire tracks, and or footprints. Thats the best advice I can give you, and good luck on catching the poachers. Sorry to hear about the lost opportunity on the big buck also. snapper
Re: INFURIATING--Anything to do?? Don't know the laws in GA...but in PA the Game comm. will do nothing about trespassing unless there is a game violation. Another words, they will do nothing to someone for just trespassing! Its a civil case and we must contact the state police. I don't understand why if someone is going through the trouble of trespassing (they are already breaking the law) why not take the deer with them? Ravin R10 man
Re: INFURIATING--Anything to do?? I hate to say it bud.. those look like tines punctures to me.. It IS possible that buck got speared in a fight...he's even got what appears to be tine scratches up his shoulder in your pic....That does NOT look like any Bullet exit to me..just two perfectly round holes..both of em,.. the entry and exit holes, dont line up either at that angle...unless the poacher was lying on the ground shooting up at the deer..??At VERY close range,.. sorry bud, just my observations

Stinger-Hunter
Re: INFURIATING--Anything to do?? You might want to trick them and spread the word that you want to give the antlers to whoever killed it because you don't want to waste the animal. Cops use this type of thing all the time telling wanted criminals that they won some contest - then they arrest them all when they all show up to collect their prize. This would be hysterical if you could make that one work.
wtnhunt
Re: INFURIATING--Anything to do?? Thatis a shame, and I would be infuriated too. Would get the appropriate law enforcement agencies involved with this.
LETMGROW
Re: INFURIATING--Anything to do?? This just boils down to no respect for you as a landowner/taxpayer. Folks wonder why access is becoming difficult. Get law enforcement involved. BEWARE of setting traps. This could be considered negligence if someone got injured! Ask your local authorities about this. If you set a trap and somebody got hurt you might be the victum!!!! Doesn't seem fair but the law sometimes protects the wrong people. Good luck! Swamphunter
Re: INFURIATING--Anything to do?? You guys are talking about setting traps guys. One it is illegal and two if you do it and someone gets hurt, not only will you be arrested, but you will be responsible for injuries also. Use your head a bit when it comes to this topic, there are legal ways to go about it. Start with the authorities and the trail cam.
