ousoonerfan22
I gathered some white oak acorns during muzzleloader season and have them in a large plastic storage container with about three inches of potting soil plus I'm keeping them in the shop and out of the cold. This week some of them are starting to sprout out of the acorn hull,I'll probably keep them inside until spring. I gathered some more last week and I disced some rows this week so I'll plant these in the ground tomorrow. Do you think it will be 7 or 8 years before these tree's produce acorns? dogdoc
Re: white oak acorns [ QUOTE ] You're not serious? [/ QUOTE ] yep--and 20 years is the minimum. You don't plant oaks for yourself--it's for your children. The only oak that will produce in 5 to 7 years is the sawtooth oak. Actually some white oaks may take up to 50 years to produce acorns . ousoonerfan22
Re: white oak acorns These acorns are sprouting out of the top and then shooting down.So is this the tap root growing and I should plant them upside down? Gator
Re: white oak acorns I would think it wouldn't matter which way you plant them, they will know which way to go to get sunlight/moisture. If it takes 20-30 years, boy we got some old trees on our place in Alabama
wtnhunt
Re: white oak acorns They would probably grow fine, but as Todd said they do take a long time before they ever start producing.
