Addct2hntng
all I can say is wow !!!! heres the picks from the 20 rounds I shot today 50 yards 5 shots 100 yards 15 shots
AJ
Re: first trip to range with new gun I sure hope you are shooting those things nice and slow. It would be a shame to ruin that new barrel. That gun should shoot 5 shot groups under 1/2" at 100 yards. You probably need to find the right load. Addct2hntng
Re: first trip to range with new gun yeah I was takin my time would shot 5 with the 22-250 then 5 with the 17 and why and how would it ruin the barrel when he shot it all the time at compitions? and if going to the shooting range and shooting a box shells ruins the barrel then it must not be that good. as for 1/2 groups if I was on a bench or a rest Im sure it would group 1/2 as this was sitting on the chair I use when hunting to get a good feel for it . either way Im happy with it it just gets better from here

AJ
Re: first trip to range with new gun [ QUOTE ] ...and if going to the shooting range and shooting a box shells ruins the barrel then it must not be that good. [/ QUOTE ] I guess you don't understand thermal erosion do you? An over zealous shooter destroy a barrel in one hot summer day with a box of 50 rounds if common sence is not used. Steel erodes faster when its temperature is elevated. The throat of the bore will be the hottest as it gets the brunt of the gas. As it gets hot and more and more rounds are fired it will tear away metal. The bigger the cartridge is relative to the bore size the longer you need to take between shots and groups. Typically in BR competition the shooter is allowed 10 minutes for a 5 shot group. They can shoot as many sighters as they want. They take their time and its a long time between groups. All I am saying is you have a nice semi custom gun there. Take care of it. Don't over heat the barrel. If the metal gets too hot to hold, its being damaged. Addct2hntng
Re: first trip to range with new gun thanks for explaining I now understand what you mean . this barrel never even got warm today I always have shot 5 rounds let it sit then shoot again as long it wasnt warm to the touch . if your first post would have been like this one I would have understood jk I take any advice I can get noone else hunts in my family so I always have been a learn as I go . so any advice is good advice thanks AJ
Guest ronin
Re: first trip to range with new gun That brings up a good point. I never shot anything as hot as my 300 RUM. My range practice consists of two-three shots, then I wait for about 15-20 minutes or however long it takes to walk 300 yards exam the target and walk back. Repeat the process. Is this good timing? AJ
Re: first trip to range with new gun Hey Ronin, That is a drawback to the big RUM cases. They heat the barrel up quickly. Spitting 90+ grains of powder in the little bore is like using a blow torch. Your shoot and walk is a good sequence. Just grab the barrel before each shot. If you can't hang on it comfortably, its too warm. We carry a cooler full of ice water when we used to go to a squirrel town. Some days you have to make yourself stop and cool down the barrels. Definately when its 90° - 100° ambient and the critters are up and about. We swap between a few guns and dunk them in the cool water after 4 or 5 shots. The temp never gets hot enough that we risk warping or tempering the barrel. It keeps us shooting all day. Run a snake through the bore and its back to fragging varmints. Guest ronin
Re: first trip to range with new gun Thanks AJ, never thought of using water. Used to do it in the Army but haven't thoughty about it for my own guns. Does a titanium barrel make any difference?
AJ
Re: first trip to range with new gun [ QUOTE ] Does a titanium barrel make any difference? [/ QUOTE ] Nope, actually it may erode faster. Titanium tends to gall easier than steel, so it is possible that it can wear as fast or faster. Titanium is not indestructable. Its biggest advantage is its light weight. It is not really any stronger than steel just lighter.

WGumz
Re: first trip to range with new gun AJ, I know this is off the subject, but I will be getting a Bushmaster Ar-15 next week for work purposes. Is the AR any different with the thermal erosion? When we shoot at work, we shoot the 25 round course through those guns and alot of the patrol rifles get really hot when the guys are practicing. I know going through courses, guys get these barrels really hot, I mean you can't even touch these. I just don't really want to ruin this barrel. This thing will be shot a bunch by me, weekly and alot in the beginning, getting the iron sights adjusted and then getting the EO Tech sighted in. Any info would be appreciated. AJ
Re: first trip to range with new gun Many of the AR guns have chrome lined bores to retard the erosion. Most of the guns for a rifle course are not exactly tack drivers. If they shoot 2 MOA its perfectly fine and competitive. The difference from damage will not be as apparent in a 2 MOA gun as it will be in a 1/4 MOA gun. Even with my AR, I slow down and take my time, but its one of the most accurate guns I own.
