Calling Manipulation

Re: Calling Manipulation

I start out quiet just little blows incase one is sleepign 100 yards away, I do not beleive in the patterns liek soem say, i shoot a ton of coyotes a year and make it up as I go, I find that a differnt sequence each time is just about as good as a different call! I will start just blowing in harder then as I end the blow cup my hand at the end and sort of quiver it, as I go into a 2-4 minute sequence I will get the raspiest sound the call can make right in the middle, make it sound liek the rabbit is gurgling on blood and tryign to get air,as I end the sequence I will sort of slow down to send the message the rabbit is on its last legs and it seems to hurry the coyote up to get a meal before its all gone! I have found that any different sound will work, a dyign rabbit does not sound the same each time one dies either shoudl your calls! Most important is the hands at the end of the call, it will make the quivers more realistic,I also find that blowing in different directions make it sound liek there si movement there also and gets the coyote more interested, just rememebr here that you will be movign so be carefull, that is the easiest way to bust a coyote,I liek to be behind a brush so I can move a bit to get a better sound!! Good luck!!!

Re: Calling Manipulation

I pretty much do the same as sureshot when I use mouth calls. I never sound the same as my last calling sequence. I want to sound like a rabbit that is in extreme pain, I do this by cupping the end of the call and moving my fingers up and down fast, and quivering into the call. As I progress i will slow down to sound like a rabbit on it last breath of life.

Re: Calling Manipulation

I have to agree with SS and jcwa in you need to change it up from stand to stand. Having several different hand calls in your arsenial sure helps. I try to remember what call I have used and where, so that the next time I call that area I can use something different. The 1st time I call an area I may go with a cottontail or jackrabbit distress, then a few weeks later I may go in and start off with a few howls and go into a coyote pup distress. Mixing things up and being versatile with your calls helps. The weather will also play a role in how you use your hand calls. On quiet still mornings it doesn't take a loud call to cover a good size area, whereas on windy days you may need to up the volume. Good luck and keep us posted on how you do.
