preacherman
I found a cast iron fish cooker on sale yesterday at an outdoor store here close to the house. My mom told me that I needed to put cooking oil on my cast iron pot and put it in the oven so that I could make it "rust resistent"........well, I did it and after about 10 minutes, I have nothing but a smoke filled apartment! Oh, well, maybe the smoke detectors won't go off!

LifeNRA
Re: BIG MISTAKE!!!! We have some cast iron cookware. To season them at first we did that. But you must keep the heat down to 200 or less. After that you never really wash them. If you must wash them you have to re-season them again. Once they get that black finish on them they are great!!!

Guest Andrea
Re: BIG MISTAKE!!!! It also helps if you wrap the entire thing in aluminum foil too after you grease it down. ( NO SMOKE) LOL
buckee
Re: BIG MISTAKE!!!! Yep, we have an old cast iron deep frying-pan that I have to recondition in the same way from time to time. Fun isn't it

Jimfrompa
Re: BIG MISTAKE!!!! I have to reseason mine all the time because my wife refuses to not wash them. I coat them with a thin coat of oil and put them in the oven on warm over night. Seems to do the trick. That is till my wife washes them again :-(

markyj987
Re: BIG MISTAKE!!!! What?? You don't have to wash cast iron cookware? I never knew that... I'm no Emeril...heck, I can barely make a PB&J sandwich. So I've got to ask--what is so wonderful about cast iron pots and pans other than that they're great for self-defense? VermontHunter
Re: BIG MISTAKE!!!! It's the way they heat up Marky,, they don't have hot spots like the thin tin pans do..... and they are heavy and don't move around the stove when you are trying to mix ingredients...... Cast iron also retains the flavor of the foods your are cooking, Yes there's a bit of matience to them but they are more than worth the little extra effort... Now about this self defense thing you mentioned,,, LOL.... What's up with this ?? have you been smacked around with one from an old EX or what ??..... ksbowhntr77
Re: BIG MISTAKE!!!! Dad told me to put only virgin olive oil in a light coat on the cast after you clean it. I only put hot water in my cast and clean it while it's still hot. Wipe it dry after you clean it and then put the olive oil on the cast. The olive oil doesn't get sticky like vegetable oil. My skillet is a big 14 incher. You can really pack in the good stuff.
Texan_Til_I_Die
Re: BIG MISTAKE!!!! To clean cast iron without losing the "seasoning", use white vinegar. Pour it in the pot/pan and heat it up a bit on the stove top. Use a spatula to loosen anything that's stuck on. Pour the vinegar out and wipe clean.
