835

I am currently looking at buying a 835. I have one problem though. Mossberg now makes a 835 grand slam with a 20 inch barrel with a ported x-factor choke tube and the 835 with a 24 inch barrel that is ported. This guns only purpose in life will be used for turkey hunting, which would be better suited? Will 4 inches make a large difference at 40 yds? confused.gif

Re: 835

Not necessarily. It will make a difference at 50 or 55 yards. I would definately go for a 24" ported barrel over a non ported barrel. I would also go for a 28" ported barrel over a 24" ported barrel. I don't see the benefit of a 20 - 24" barrel on a hunting shotgun. The patterns are better, the velocity is higher with the longer barrel, it moves the blast farther away, it balances out the gun better also. I have not seen a situation where a 4 or 6" shorter barrel would have maneuvererd better in the woods for me. I have a 28" barrel on my 11-87 adn I use a 2" extended choke. My 835 has a 28" barrel. Both are great on turkeys.

Re: 835

I have the 835 Ulti-Mag 24" barrel. I have used this gun for doves to turkeys. Mossberg sent me an email that its not the barrel anymore that does the trick, its the choke. So I guess I could my 835 for duck & goose as well. But I would not opt for the 20" barrel. Taking a little bit of weight and balance from them 3.5 shells!
