ousoonerfan22
You guys ever plant groves of pine trees for cover? I just bought some virginia and loblolly pines off of ebay.I'm planning on planting the virginia pines in staggered rows along the fence to block the neighbors view of my apple trees and food plots.I'll plant the loblollys in the open pockets in the timber making small groves for cover. Guest deldeer
Re: planting pines for cover i hunted on a tree farm where they grew them, they grow fairly fast, however,i bought some to plant on my property and they all died...seems that they did'nt take to the soil to good. the tree farm had very sandy soil, where as mine is very clayish.....might want to check on that........good luck
Tominator
Re: planting pines for cover The previous owner of my property planted well over 100 white pine for a wind break. Funny thing is, for deer, the only thing they use if for is scrapes and rubs. I've never seen them bed in them.
dogdoc
Re: planting pines for cover The cover should work great and nothing like keeping the neighbors honest!
ousoonerfan22
Re: planting pines for cover My parents only own 17 acres and the deer will only travel across it,hopefully stopping at my food plots. I'm mainly trying to block off the neighbors view and the openings in the timber near the road. I've also started piling up brush piles to help block the neighbors view. My relatives have 200 acres north of my parents and the lady(anti-hunter)across the road has 40 acres of thick timber plus the verdigris river is only 1 mile south. The deer travel through here but mainly at night. One thing that confuses me is that I only had bucks in the pictures on my deer-cam this fall no doe's or yearlings. Guest MarylandQDMA
Re: planting pines for cover first off loblolly pines have no wildlife value. save your money. the problem is the branches will grow above tha out of reach of deer to quckly and provide NO cover for them. you are better off getting hold of the following, white cedars (the best), spruce, hemlock, white pines. the cedars will provide cover and are a prefered food (you will have to protect the trees untill they are old enough to handle the browse pressure). spruce and hemlocks provide good cover (they retain their lower branches) and are also browsed by deer (just not as hard as the cedars). however protection of the young trees is reccomended. the white pines will provide cover but like the loblolly pines will loose the lower branches and will need to be cut and replanted. my curent project is to get 4 acres of cedars and hemlocks planted in a 4 acre area over the enxt 4 to 5 years. oh the other nice thing about the hemlocks and spruce are they can tollerate shade and in some cases grow faster in the shade in order to reach the sun. this makes it nice to plant cause you don't realy need to clear cut and area to plant them. hope this helps.
