vagobbln
I got my order in yesterday for my .204 Ruger. Need to get the "toppings" to go on it now. Looking at either a Nikon Monarch or a Leupold VX-ll. For those of you (AJ) who have had both brands, do you prefer one over the other? If so, why? I'm guessing most wouldn't walk across the street for the difference. Thanks.
kooter
Re: Nikon or Leupold At one time I did own a leupold vxII and it was a great scope. I have the nikon Buckmaster now which is probably not as nice as the monarch. I think either way you go you will get a good scope.
Guest J_Owens_66
Re: Nikon or Leupold Monach is a better scope. Leupold is overpriced, good, but WAY overpriced. Nikon is a good scope maker, AJ knows where you can get some refurbished ones a heck of alot cheaper than a new one. I think its a Midway USA. Alot of scope for the money....Burris Fullfield 2. Check them out, i have found them to outperform everything in their price range, and i've looked through everything.
Guest Colorado Bob
Re: Nikon or Leupold Don't think you can go wrong on either. I'm a Leupold guy. I just got a VX-II 3x9 for my Tiika. Plan on using it this fall for elk. You get what you pay for in optics. CB
AJ
Re: Nikon or Leupold Like Bob said, either way you should be pleased. Personally, I prefer the Nikon over the Leupold. Different strokes for different folks.
Guest ronin
Re: Nikon or Leupold Nikon is known in the camera business for great lenses. Better than the norm. I think the same can be said for the scope glass. However, I believe the VXIII's are better...but more expensive.
Born2Hunt
Re: Nikon or Leupold IMO simmons makes a great scope. I took the NIKON off my 44 and ut a SIMMONS on it and it was a lot cheaper and clearer. Much more bang for the buck.

AJ
Re: Nikon or Leupold This is why there are so many manufacturers and models to choose from. Everyone has their favorite. This is what keeps conversations at the campfire interesting.
vagobbln
Re: Nikon or Leupold Well, my Dad called last night and may have made my decision a lot easier. He has a brand new Leupold he wants to give me. He's had it for 4 or 5 years and never used it. It's either a VX-ll 3x9x50 or VX-lll 3.5x10x50. He couldn't remember. I was thinking of putting something on the .204 with a little more magnification (maybe 4x12) - but for this price ($0) I think I can make do! AJ - Is it going to be hard to find CZ rings high enough to accomodate a 50mm scope?
AJ
Re: Nikon or Leupold Mark, They are easy to get. I suggest Warne rings as they are high quality, strong, precision, and moderately priced. Natchez has them in low, medium, or high. Although some are backordered. Midsouth Shooters also carries them, as does Midway. . AJ
Canadian_Goose
Re: Nikon or Leupold AJ will those guys who sell refurbished scopes ship to Canada eh? Conctact them with your questions. As far as the refurbished scopes, I know the Refurbed Nikon scopes have a 90 day warranty. I suggest checking them out very closely when they arrive. I put them through a test. I mount them and lock them in a vise and check all of the adjustments to see that they are true. I center the reticle, and give the scopes the 1 hour dunk test in water to make sure they are waterproof. I leave tehm dry for a day and stick them in the freezer for a day to be sure they will not fog. If they pass that I keep them and mount them on guns of known accuracy. If they hold groups I expect with that gun, they are keepers.

AJ
Re: Nikon or Leupold With high you should definately clear. With medium, it may be close. I would get the high rings myself. I prefer to use flip up scope caps and you will have problems with medium height rings, 50mm obj, and caps.
