Ruined Hide

I ruined a great hide today. We called in a real pretty bobcat can my son took her at 60 yards. Problem was my .243 55 gr Nosler Ballistic Tips blew her up. Going back to Barnes X-Bullets or solids. Any other suggestions for .243 WSSM would be appreciated. confused.gif

Re: Ruined Hide

You can use the WSSM but you have to slow it down a lot. You want to poke a hole other than red mist it. I agree with Hoosierbuck in that the .17 Mach 4 (centerfire) or the .17 Remington are much better at saving hides.

Re: Ruined Hide

Amazingly, I didn't have this problem with max loaded .222's...similar velocity to the Winchester factory loaded varmit round. The difference was my bullets.

What do you think about Barnes solids? It is only 10 gr. less then my hunting round: 85 Gr. X-bullet. What velocity range would you look at for it?

The 17 might be a good rifle but I was hoping to use the .243 because I get a lot of practice with my CA deer gun that way.

Re: Ruined Hide

I shot a ton of coyoters with the 6mm and once i downloaded to abotu 2900-3000 fps it was fine anyhtign faster trouble! with the .17 its a great gun but my fur buiyer said that any of them that are flying at 4000 do a good job of expansion, he said eh has perfect luck with abotu 3800 and his .17, with the 22 shells abotu 34-3500 is max to avouid lots of damage, now the .204, he does not want to buy any furs shot with it lol!! he says that all he has seen look like they were shot by a mag,may just be the shells and speed also!! the thing I have figured out is what do you want speed or good hides, about the only gun I have found that you do not need to download toget perfect hides is the .223 or .222, throw a 22 cal bullet at 3300 fps like them or one at 3800 like a 250 which will blow more?

Re: Ruined Hide

I hate fmj, in a lung or heart shot they run for ever with no expansion and in a shoulder or bone they blow up just as bad as a HP or tipped,I have found that Hp work the best for me, shot a ton of v-max with the 6mm and liked them but had to slow down os much,if to fast would explode on impact and blow on the hide side, hp I could get a bit more speed with minimal damage, I have 4 boxes of fmj and only shot fox with them and lost 2 3 years ago that got down a hole!!unless a ton of snow for trackign I will not use fmj!! just my opinion of course!! good luck in your decision!!
