bwlacy
I am going to try some new loads for my 300H&H. I've been looking at the Scirocco and the SST bullets. Does anybody have any input on these two bullets? They will be used for Whitetails only. The Scirocco has a very high BC according to the website. I just am curious how these bullets will hold up on impact, I don't want them to blow up and not penetrate. I was considering the 150's, I should get around 3200 fps. Shots could be close or out as far as I want. I don't plan on shooting much past 350 yards but I could if I can get the gun and myself capable. Thanks Matt
VTbowman
Re: Bullet ? I used 180g Swift Sciroccos in my 300 Ultra Mag with awesome results. The Scirocco has a fairly thick jacket towards the rear of it and it help maintain mass plus the poly tip increases expansion and still punches threw quite effectly. I have not had anything less then holes blown threw both sides of all deer I have shot. (Mostly high should shots too with massive bone damage/bone/virtibrea missing) Ranges from 50 yards out to 325 yards. All of them dropped execpt one and that one I hit in the lungs only, and hit it again and then it dropped. Jmo

AJ
Re: Bullet ? Yep, the Scirocco will work fine for your H&H mag. I shoot them in my 300 Wby (180 gr) and its the load I took for elk hunting. I have taken deer with it and it performed superbly. My deer kills have been from 10 yards out to 100 yards or so and in each case the Scirocco worked outstanding.
VTbowman
Re: Bullet ? True story about the one I hit and it ran. I hit it square in the boiler room at about 90 yards broad side and saw it buckle and run 90* to my box stand. I jacked another round and took a running shot at a hard 1/4 away and hit it behind the right ear and the exit was out the mouth. Upon inspection I could not see the 2nd shot at 1st. Not until we grabbed the right ear and then noticed blood drip out the hole. The only exit damage was a ripped tounge. BUT... The cool thing about it was when I went to field dress it, it had hardly ANY matter in the chest cavity. I mean no more the a cup/cup and 1/2 worth! Then when I went to saw off the antlers the brain was liquid and poured out. That was sorta gross and I did NOT expect it. All of my other deer were high shoulder shots and they dropped straight down with that gun and bullet combo.
bwlacy
Re: Bullet ? Thanks guys. I will load some this spring and see how they shoot. If I ever get out west to elk hunt I will load a heavier bullet.
Guest ronin
Re: Bullet ? While your at it...look at Barnes Triple Shock X-bullets and VLC X Bullets. I have never had one come apart and the accuracy is superb, IMO. I dropped two elk and two deer with with the 165 Gr XLC BT in my 300 RUM. These bullets were pushing 3500 FPS and none of these animals moved afterwards. This bullet didn't loose a grain. Barnes Bullets
bwlacy
Re: Bullet ? I had also thought about the Triple Shock, but wasn't sure about accuracy with a hollow point. I may have to look into them also. I wish you could purchase different bullets in a box of ten instead of 50. Then if you don't like them you aren't out much cash, and you don't have all these extra bullets. Thanks for the info.
Guest ronin
Re: Bullet ? They are improving the 3X also by capping the HP with a polymer tip and intergrating a tungsten base. I'll be interested in that.
