JPGS22
I was looking at a nice savage .17 at a local gun shop and was wondering what everyone thought about this gun. If I get it I was going to use it for fox, coyote, and ground hogs. My .243 ruger does a little to much damage to a coyote. What do you all think? Guest ronin
Re: .17 hmr I shoot yotes and bobcats with the .17 but only at ranges under 100 yards. Actually, I like 50 and under far more. The .17 seems to loose umph after a relatively short distance and windage kills the bullet, too. It is not my first choice for large varmits unless they are close. My best bobcat hide is because of the .17.

AJ
Re: .17 hmr [ QUOTE ] I like the 17 REM. for yotes. [/ QUOTE ] Most definately! I have smoked some critters with it out past 350 yards. But since it is a centerfire, its a different critter.
Slugger
Re: .17 hmr have you tried using heavier bullets in your .243? i can see where varmit loads would leave some nasty holes but if you tried a load for larger game the bullet shouldnt have time to expand on a yote. Guest ronin
Re: .17 hmr I'm dealing with that issue now with the 243. I am going to try solids and slightly lower velocity.

mule659
Re: .17 hmr I love my .17 hmr. I use it mainly for squirrel, rabbits, and other small game but man talk about a tack driver. First animal I shot was a fox squirrel at about 75 yards with a perfect head shot. Cant go wrong with it on small game but if you go for yotes keep it to head shots at pretty closr range if you ask me.
