Lets talk hanging stands

I'd appreciate some tips and storys on how you all hang your fixed position stands. For a nice straight tree i could see using your climber to help aid in hanging your stand, however this doesnt work on every tree, nor does everyone have a climber. Where legal do you use screw in steps, or attachable ladders then once you get up there try to fix the stand in place? Also what are some tips on getting the screw in steps into place, do you pre drill at all? Its almost offseason here now so i;m just preparring for when I'm going to be hanging some new stands next year and would just like to hear some stories and advice from others.

Re: Lets talk hanging stands

I use a climber's belt to work my way up the tree installing screw-in steps, and I do predrill the holes, with my portable 14.4 volt drill. It sure makes the job easier.

3legs and I built our own climbers, quite a few years back, most of which have been stolen, but I used to climb up the tree with it, then hang a rope ladder from two little metal cleats off of the front of it, and keep it there as a fixed stand for the season. It worked well, but I found that I had to tie a log to the bottom of the rope ladder, to help stabalize it for climbing.

Re: Lets talk hanging stands

I use climbing sticks with my Lock-On stands.

I use 2 sections of an old safety belt placed together and straped around the tree for a climbing belt.

I use what will end up being my gear rope to pull up another section that I have tied on previously. When it looks like I'm getting to where I'll put the last section on I'll tie the stand on the gear rope. At the hieght I want the stand I'll put a small bow hanger hook in the tree in the direction that I want the stand to face. I'll pull up the stand and hang it temporarily on the Bow hanger hook...then place the ratchet straps holding the stand and tighten them.

Re: Lets talk hanging stands

My favorite stands are hang-on's with stick ladders. I'm still not sold on what type, but I'm looking at the API line.

For stick ladders, I like something that is 20' with rungs that are the same height on each side. That way, I can put my stand at 15' or 16' and have a lot of extra ladder to hang on to while climbing into my stand. I also like even rungs because I step into my stand with my right foot, so I have the stand level with a left rung. With alternating rungs, I am limited to what height I can go.

To hang them, I just use a safety harness in a "line-man's" setup so I can have both hands free and still be secured to the tree. I simply attach the ladder while climbing up. I attach a pull-up rope to the stand and then to my harness and when I am ready to hang it, I just pull it up and put it into place. With some practice, you can do it fairly quickly.

A good tip a friend of mine gave me was to hang stand after a rain storm. The wet ground will kill any human scent. wink.gif

Re: Lets talk hanging stands

I just use the screw in steps. I don't like the real big steps either, cause they are harder to screw in and out. It's so easy to just screw them in up to whatever height you want and then hang the stand. I move my stands a lot during the year based on deer movement so I like them to be easy to take down and move. I've also used the TV antenas for more permanant stand setups, they work great!

Re: Lets talk hanging stands

Like buckee, I use a climber's belt so I have both hands free to work with. I've used a climber on occasion to get a hang on stand just above the 1st limbs in a tree but that's usually an exception to most of my stand hanging situations.

As far as steps or stick ladders, I prefer stick ladders over screw in steps except when I'm out of state. Stick ladders are just safer and easier to me to put on a tree here at home for most situations. When I'm traveling out of state though I just use screw in steps. They just take up a lot less room in the back of my Yukon. I don't predrill holes for my screw in steps but I'm particular about the ones I'll use. I only buy screw in steps that have a long tapered point. They are a whole lot easier to get started in a tree as opposed to those blunt tipped suckers.

Re: Lets talk hanging stands

I like to use an attachable ladder with portable stands. They are more work to get to your spot, but once you get them there, they are less work, easier to climb in the dark.

I have found that it is a LOT easier to hang a hang-on, when you are working from above it. It is hard to work over your head, but add a couple steps, or what ever you need to do, and work from above..

I primarily use climbing sticks with fixed position stands! Safety belts a must while hanging and hunting! I now use ratchet straps on everything! ladder sticks & stands. Some of these pull straps and ropes just dont cut it for me anymore. Nothing more important than being safe!
