Re: How did your archery season go?

This was the first time in a long time that i did not get a deer with my bow. Had some close calls that just didn't pan out but mostly it was due to hunting new properties and trying to get the deer figured out.

But to be honest even though I didn't get one with my bow I still had a great season, just great to get to go out.

Re: How did your archery season go?

I was able to take my very first deer.It was a big mature doe.I past the rest for a buck.Never did happen. Now I'm preparing for a turkey.I was able to stalk the doe that I took which is a lttle more difficult.I made a 25-30 yard shot.Clean pass through. She ran about 40 yards and rolled over.

Re: How did your archery season go?

It was real hard to get around last year for me. Hard to set up treestands & such with the arthritus getting out of hand. I've been off work since last Wednesday because my foot is swelled so bad I can't put any pressure on it.

Bought me a Stackhouse blind to try this year. Bought a brickhouse one, but it seems like you only have so much room for shooting, so I think I'll take that one back.

If these blinds don't do the trick this year, I'll be hanging up the bow for good. As it is, I may have to use a crossbow anyways.

Did get out a few times and saw a few deer, but didn't get a good shot presentation. After the earn-a-buck started up, had no doe tagged, and just like always had a 6 pointer within 8 yards broadside for about 45 minutes!

Oh well.

Re: How did your archery season go?

Got skunked this year, seen deer, lots of spikes this year so I am really looking forward to next year and seeing more "tined" bucks. Did see a 6 point and 8 pointer running together but of course they were about 60 to 70 yards away. I did have fun and I seen deer every time while on stand.

This was the first year I got to see 4 bucks chasing one doe, she was a hot doe for sure and these 4 spikes were running her ragged. The bigger spike would chase the others away from her but the others would only go about 10 to 20 yards as they wanted their turn! smile.gif That was cool to see as it all unfolded 20 yards from my stand. The doe stopped to take a break and it was cool to see all these bucks interested in her but the more dominant one keeping them back. Neat to see that as most never do. Keeps me going back!

Re: How did your archery season go?

My started out pretty darn bad! I reptured a disc in my lower back, three days before my bow season opened and then proceeded to miss the first two months of the season. Foour weeks after surgery, I was able to make my Ohio trip and take a small four point. I went hunting on the property I hunt here in NC and took a three point the weekend after I got back from Ohio. I feel very fortunate to have taken two deer with my bow, considering how my season started out and only hunting for 8 days (one week in OH, and 3 Saturdays here)this year. grin.gif

Re: How did your archery season go?

I had one deer ready to come in and somebodies freakin Jack Russel terrier ran it outta the field. Now I hunt with hounds on deer and love it but this was obviously a yard dog that wasnt properly chained up. If it was during gun season and it was a deer hound I would understand because I should have brought a rifle lol. But it was during bow season and IT WASNT EVEN A REAL HOUND!!!! It was somebodies yappy yard dog. People just need to control their pets sometimes you know? Because now I garentee its only a matter of time before someone complains of somebody runnin a "deer hound" and itll be that dog and well get fussed at. Dont get me wrong I love to hunt with dogs but that wont no hunting dog in the first place. And I got a shot at a fox but barely missed him so I went back out there last nite and shot right over his back at 200 yards with the 270 Browning of my grandads. Thats ok Ill get him sooner or later. hehehe lol

Re: How did your archery season go?

All in all? Pretty darn good.

I only harvested two deer with my bow this year. But one of them happened to be my biggest buck with a bow. A nice 8 pointer harvested on the annual Okie Realtree deer camp. I also harvested a doe.

Looking back, I learned a lot from this season. The buck I harvested was a 50 yard shot. After shooting 3-D and practicing all year long I was confident that I could make a kill shot at the distance and I had previously ranged the shot and made the decision that I would take it if it presented itself. However, the only thing I didn't take into effect was the deer cooperating. I had to stop the deer with a grunt and when I did, he looked directly at me. When the shot went off, he jumped my string and I ended up shooting him in the shoulder.

What did I learn?? I will probably never take a 50 shot again. I know I will never take that long of a shot with the deer looking in my direction, for sure.

All in all, a very productive season. Got to hunt with friends and harvest deer. What more could I ask for??

I had a pretty good season. It started off slow. I only saw 2 bucks until the weekend of Nov. 12. That weekend I saw 11 bucks and harvested a 135 class 8 point with my Hoyt Magnatec. have not hunted a whole lot since then. all in all... Good season!!

Re: How did your archery season go?

I didn't get to hunt the archery season here, because I was just too busy, but I hunt with bow all through the gun season too, so it's all archery season to me smile.gif

I managed to tag out on 2 deer. One buck, and a mis-judged doe that turned out to be a little spike-nubber (with a good sized body).

If I learned anything this year, I think it's to make sure my glasses are clean. grin.gif

I had a doe early on in the season and then shot a 8 pointer that will score in the low 130's and a week later I shot a nice 14 point non typ that will score in the low 150's. So all in all it was a great year for me.
