rifleman25
I was wondering when the best time to hunt Oryx at White Sands is? I was hoping to draw march because it is still cool out and there is not much other hunting going on.
jdickey
Re: New Mexico Oryx??? This one was taken last month... but September seems to be a good month too. By the way, the non-res tag for oryx has gone up in NM!
Guest Colorado Bob
Re: New Mexico Oryx??? Not sure how to answer this. It's when the NM DOW has a season. Mine was the last weekend in January. It's only a 2 day season. I didn't draw on my 1st choice---my tag was for my 3rd choice. Lot's of guys apply every year & have yet to draw. It's a once in a lifetime tag. Go look. I got my bull on the stallion range. CB

Guest Colorado Bob
Re: New Mexico Oryx??? Rifleman----I reread your question. I think you are asking which season to apply for? I applied for the 1st season & the unit with the largest number of tags. 10% of the tags go to NR so I figured the largest number of tags gave me the best chance. I applied for the 1st season because the oryx get spooky after they have been hunted. Also the weather is an unknown a winter storm could put you S-O-L if it hits on your weekend. The application has 3 choices of hunts---besure to fill out all 3. My tag was for my 3rd choice. I think they drew my application late in the drawing. My 1st & 2nd choices were already filled----but my 3rd choice still had an opening. The White Sands has alot of oryx so REALLY any tag is a good draw. It's a good hunt----good luck on the draw. FYI--I drew on my 1st try for the Stallion Range--late January hunt. I think NR have a better chance than RES. Not to many NR are willing to fork over the money for a tag. It was $1500 if my memory serves me correct. RES tags are @ $100 & every NM applies for them. Ask if you have questions--I'll try my best to answer them. Guest Colorado Bob
Re: New Mexico Oryx??? jdickey---Is that your oryx? I've seen that photo before on monstermuleys, I think. Which part of the Missile range did it come from? That's a nice one. 40" female --correct? Mine was 39" bull. CB

Guest malikai
Re: New Mexico Oryx??? wow! That is a beautiful animal. jeez, i'd hate to get mauled by one of those. Are those indigenous to the U.S.?
jdickey
Re: New Mexico Oryx??? The "Oryx" as New Mexico calls it, is native to South Africa. It is more commonly called GEMSBOK. It's cousin is the SCIMITAR ORYX, also from Africa. You can see the difference...
Leo
Re: New Mexico Oryx??? Jdickey is quite right Gemsbok are from southern africa. Based on my own personal research. The biggest specimens are mostly found in the country of Namibia near the Kalahari. WhiteSands does produce some very very nice ones though. Don't get too hung up on the fact they are not indigenous. Ringneck Pheasants are originally from China and wild pigs are from europe. Both of those animals are here to stay I am sure. Unlike the deer species of North America Gemsbok have horns not antlers. The primary differences are they do not shed their headgear once a year and both sexes grow horns. These horns are a part of the Oryx's life 24/7. As a result they really learn how to use them. Reportly these animals deserve as much respect as a bear or wild pig when wounded. 40inches of dagger sharp horn is incredibly dangerous. I think they are about one of the most stunning animals on the planet and hope to be able to harvest one, one day.
