Guest hookedonhunting
I recently bought a new Weatherby Vanguard in 300 wsm. i shoot off sandbags where i can hold it on a bullet hole but it continues to spray them. i topped it with a leupold vxlll 4.5-14x 50. i shot federal 150gr nosler ballistic tips and then tried federal 180gr nosler accubonds. at 34 bucks a box it is painful to experiment. oh yeah the gun also came with a good test target group. thanks guys!! too_pointer
Re: ACCURACY PROBLEMS When you say " spray them " how much are you talking , and at what distance ?? I see that you prefer Federals ammo. Have you tried any others ? AJ is more in touch with the bigger catridges than me, he will hop in here and give you some good advice too_
johnf
Re: ACCURACY PROBLEMS I had a similar problem with a 25-06 last year. I would check the mount and rings first. You probibly already know this, but it doesn't take much play in a scope mount to really mess you up.
Guest hookedonhunting
Re: ACCURACY PROBLEMS i am shooting at 100 yards and groups are 2 1/2 -3 inches. i have tried just federal ammo.
AJ
Re: ACCURACY PROBLEMS There are a few things I would do to tighten the groups: 1. I would look at the scope mount like John mentioned, I would re-mount the scope as it may not be on properly or securely. 2. Do a proper bedding job or have it done by your gunsmith. The factory bedding may be inducing stress on the action. 3. If the gun still does not shoot decent groups, I would have someone else that can shoot good groups with a magnum try the gun. 4. Try some different ammo. If its too expensive, sell the Howa WSM and buy a 30-06.
hutchies
Re: ACCURACY PROBLEMS Good luck...........I will tell you though that I love my Howa chambered in .30-
EIGHTPOINT
Re: ACCURACY PROBLEMS What was used to shoot the test target with ???? If I bought a Weatherby I would expect it to shoot. If it didn't I would call the factory. Your paying good money for a name brand gun that came with a test target, why put additional money into the gun for bedding etc.. if it doesn't do what it's suppose to ??? Guest hookedonhunting
Re: ACCURACY PROBLEMS the factory test target was shot with 180 gr soft points. when i mounted the scope i put the screws in the rings with that blue loctite stuff. i am wondering if the recticle in the scope may be loose. but then again does leupold make mistakes? before i send it back to weatherby i am going to take the leupold off my dads weatherby that i know nothing is wrong with and mount it to mine. maybe that will help? AJ
Re: ACCURACY PROBLEMS [ QUOTE ] when i mounted the scope i put the screws in the rings with that blue loctite stuff. [/ QUOTE ] Again, that does not mean the scope was installed proplerly. Do the rings align even and properly? did you use any shims? [ QUOTE ] i am wondering if the recticle in the scope may be loose. [/ QUOTE ] I doubt it. If the reticle was loose, they would move around a lot. [ QUOTE ] but then again does leupold make mistakes? [/ QUOTE ] Yes, they do. They are not perfect. I have had to send repairs back as they screwed it up the first time. Their stuff is not indestructable. Again, I would recommend trying some different ammo.
NEMOdeerhunter
Re: ACCURACY PROBLEMS This is kind of a dumb question but have you cleaned it good and ran a brush through it. I had the same type of problems with a .204 that I bought. It would shoot a 6" pattern at 100yds. I rechecked my mounts and still the same thing. Tried a brand new Nikon and a new Leupold and still bad results. I got it from Bass Pro, so I called them and they told me too switch from my 32gr too 40gr and that may have helped but there was no way that it could make that much difference. I wanted too try everything before I hassled with sending it back, I wanted too clean it but I couldnt find a kit for it since it was not a common caliber. I finally found one and cleaned it really good, switched to 40gr and it shoots great now. I would say that the cleaning helped more than anything but switching bullets could have helped too.
