oo_buck
Alright, dumb question. The NEF Survivor in .410/.45 is listed on the H&R website as fully rifled, with a screw in choke for shotshells. My question is, can you shoot .410 deer slugs through this gun? Indiana is shotgun only, and last year they made the .410 legal for deer. I would like to get my 8yr old started deer hunting this next season and I think it would be perfect for her. Or, would I be just as well served by any .410 full choke. Slugs available locally for the .410 are fully rifled, and I don't believe that there are any saboted slugs for the .410, so will the fully rifled barrel even help with accuracy? Also, what kind of sights would be available for it beyond a front bead? Edit to add, Could I just get a .410/45 survivor barrel for my standard Pardner .410? too_pointer
Re: NEF Survivor If I'm reading you right, I've never hear of a fully rifled barrel with chokes for it. The rifling goes right to the end of the barell ! I don't think a full choke would be that good for throwing a slug through either. Hopefully AJ will help with this !! too_
AJ
Re: NEF Survivor I do not recommend the 410 for deer. Its way too light.

It's for an 8yr old girl under adult supervision. Other option is a .20ga, but how can I reduce felt recoil to be suitable for an 8yr old girl? AJ
Re: NEF Survivor Sorry Buddy, but my personal feelings is if they can not handle an adequate gun/load for big game, they do not need to be hunting. Some very light cartridges can cleanly kill deer sized game, but they should not be used by the least experienced individuals. We have an obligation to the game we hunt to use enough gun to do the job and have the skill to accurately place the bullet causing rapid incapacitation. If that means letting a kid miss a few years of hunting until they are physically strong enough, so be it. To lighten the recoil of a 20 ga slug, you can increase the weight of the gun, this makes it harder to carry and harder to aim for those without the necessary upper body strength. you can have the barrel ported. This will reduce the recoil also. You can install high quality Sorbethane recoil pads like the ones from Pachmayr, Limbsaver, Kick-Eez, etc to soften the blow.
