huntermq32
Hey guys I have 2.5 acers of a 50acer cornfield that I can turn into plot. I live in noth cental Il and there is alot of con and soybeans in the area. I would like to plant somthing that will atrract and hold from oct to jan if possible. The plot will have plenty of sun and a creak near buy so watering is not a problem. What would be the best thing to plant?
vagobbln
Re: What to plant Just my 2 cents but I'd give'em a mix of things. Clover and maybe also some high-carb stuff for winter like oats or winter wheat. I'd put in some strips of corn too even though it sounds like there's alot in the area. The standing corn would give'em some security cover so they might feel more comfortable coming out in the open plots. Spend some $ on lime and fertilizer. Good luck. dogdoc
Re: What to plant hard to beat corn--the soybeans will have been harvested so you shouldn't have any competition except for some loose seed on the ground. You want something that is highly attractive and very cold tolerant. If you're wanting to plant annuals then I would recommend a mix of winter wheat and brassicas. The wheat will draw them in early and the brassicas after the first good freeze. If you're wanting a good perennial plot then like stated above clover would be a good choice. good luck todd
Bond
Re: What to plant I would recommend winter wheat or winter rye. It will stay green all winter and deer love it.

LETMGROW
Re: What to plant Just a quick question. Are you intending to cut the corn before winter or let it remain standing? This could alter what you may want to plant.

huntermq32
Re: What to plant I live in grundy county. The cornfield will be harvested but I might plant a few rows in the middle of the food plot and leave them up for the deer. I don't have a lot of knowledge about food plots at all. However, I have thought about using BioLogic's Maximum, do any of you think that would work or do you have a better product suggestion? Thanks.
