Deer cough???

Had a bunch of does under me the other day. The two younger ones were coughing. They looked healthy and all that. But I've never heard of one doing that. One of them was sneezing too.

Can they get colds or what was that all about???

Re: Deer cough???

They probably have deer bot fly larvae in their nose causing them to sneeze and cough. Here read this article I copied and pasted on it.

[ QUOTE ]

Deer bot fly- Cephenemyia pratti

While in-flight the female ejects tiny larvae into the nostrils of the host deer. Once inside they migrate to sinus cavities, where they develop into big fat maggots.

If you've even seen a deer coughing and sneezing it could well be in response to the wiggling movement of grubs through the nose and throat. Once mature they're expelled from the throat, and pupate in the soil before adult flies emerge.

They don't generally cause much harm to the deer but occasionally, heavy infections may cause death by suffocation and death can also result from detached larvae migrating to the lungs.

Re: Deer cough???

I would think they would be okay for consumption considering not many people eat deer noses that I know of. wink.gif Plus I doubt the flies could live in stomach acid. Just extra protein. crazy.gif That is if it's fly maggots in their noses making them sneeze and cough. Yes, gross, but a lot of gross things live in a nose. Which is why mothers always tell you don't pick your nose. tongue.gif

Re: Deer cough???

I've heard deer cough and deer sneeze quite a number of times. Coughing is probably more common than sneezing though.

One of the deer I videoed while I was in Iowa this year was sneezing a lot. He was fairly close to my stand for several minutes. When he finally got right below my stand he appeared to have something bothering his nose. Her would paw at it and sneeze trying to get it out I guess. One the video I could see the mist coming out of his nose when he sneezed. I had a little trouble trying to keep from laughing out loud at him.

I also recall watching a buck several years ago in Louisiana that was feeding that appeared to get something caught in his throat. He made a lot of noise coughing it up and then went right back to feeding. The coughing sequence the deer went through was pretty funny though because he had a lot of trouble clearing his throat. Hearing deer cough is not that uncommon though around here but that particular deer needed somebody to give him the hymlick maneuver (however you spell it). grin.gif

Re: Deer cough???

I've heard coughs before. The first time I heard one, it was before light and it scared me because I had no idea what it was. But the deer stayed under me until it got light out. I realized it was a deer making the noise and was gonna shoot it to put it out of it's misery(I was thinking that it would just be skin and bones and foaming at the mouth) but it was perfectly healthy. I couldn't see anything physically wrong with it. So I let it go.

Re: Deer cough???

I've heard snorts and wheezes before. I've only heard one cough while out in the woods and it was a Doe last turkey season walked by me in the wood and kept coughing then scratched her nose and even rubbed her nose on the ground a few times then she sneezed and appeared whatever was in her nose/throat she sneezed out because I didn't hear a single peep as she trotted off following the buck in velvet infront of her away from me. The cough was quite strange to hear coming from a deer. It almost sounded like a human cough. The sneeze sounded like my dog when you blow air in her nose. wink.gif
