white oaks again

Recommended Posts

I'm not trying to step on any toe's but I was talking to a friend who's family owns a nursery here in Inola about white oaks not producing acorns for many years. He said they plant white oak liners which are 2-3 foot tall and these trees have been in the ground no more than 5-6 years and some are producing acorns. He also said the sawtooth and bur oaks are producing acorns already.

I'm wanting to buy 2 or 3 of those trees but they're expensive.

Hopefully these acorns that I've planted in containers and are sprouting roots will do well after transplanting them this summer.

My friend mentioned that the trees growing in the wild might take longer but their trees are pruned, fertilized and the ground around them is tilled. These trees have no competition from weeds and other trees for water.

that should answer your question right there. What will happen to the trees you buy once they are put out in the wild? Will you be able to fertilize, weed, and water on a regular basis?

Yes,I'm watering the trees I have in the ground now plus keeping the ground around them disced.I also built a small dam around each tree and spread mulch around them.

Re: white oaks again

I planted some from acorns (Chestnut and white oak) and they are about 8 years old and 15 to 20 ft tall. No acorns yet. I have heard that the sawtooth oaks start to produce in 3 to 5 years. You can get some fairly cheap in bulk. Check with your local co-op and they may be able to steer you in the right direction. grin.gif
