dartonman
Here I sit after an executed shot on Veterans day....I was on stand in the high winds in Illinois with an antlerless tag sitting in the pouch....rules have it that we can only harvest (2) bucks a year with antlers over 3 inches, so since I was giving my son a shot at a buck during shotgun season with daddy, I decided NOT to buy any further bow tags, and fill my doe tag.....well, at 8:10am a medium doe came walking down the trail, I watched it forever, it was a buddies property, and I felt great that the wind was in my favor, and my Darton was on the money out to oblivion if need be..lol..(kidding)....well, thirty yards broadside, double lunged HER....when I went to tag my doe, it was a button buck...still legal for my tag, just kinda kicking myself for missing those little things, cause his other little thing was almost non existant either........you can yell at me if you want, I really thought for sure it was a DOE....ugggggggggg........prettiest shot broadside I made all season though........al
VTbowman
Re: *Made a 120 pound mistake, still freezer meat* Don't kick your self to bad. It happens. Feel glad it was at least a humain shot and is still legal. BTW the little ones eat good too. (By little I mean age not size)
Swamphunter
Re: *Made a 120 pound mistake, still freezer meat* I did the same thing this year. I made a nice 73 yard shot with the 30-06, (left a real nice exit hole). Thought it was a small doe and it ended up being a decent button buck. Its a legal deer but I hate killing buttons. Nick
Re: *Made a 120 pound mistake, still freezer meat* It happens to the best of us D-man. I almost shot one of them button does myself this morning. I knew it had a decent body size on it and watched it for probably 20 minutes about 30 yards out. I kept hesitating the shot because I thought I could see buttons then i thought no, then he would move his head just right and i could see them. So I passed on the shot because i was about 75% sure he was a button. Oh well, I got PLENTY of time to fill my doe tag.......I need something to break my new muzzle loader in on anyways. bulldawg
Re: *Made a 120 pound mistake, still freezer meat* mmm, good eating. Does do travel alone, even when they are young like that(Shot a young one 3 or 4 years ago to earn a buck, that came in alone). To each thier own, I myself don't worry about it. huntinsonovagun
Re: *Made a 120 pound mistake, still freezer meat* 120 lbs?!?!?! What are you feeding those things???? Seriously, I think our button bucks may go 60lbs if you get a big one. I killed an 8 pt, 2 12-3 yr old, and he only weighed 122!!!! That is crazy!! Rhino
Re: *Made a 120 pound mistake, still freezer meat* [ QUOTE ] .....you can yell at me if you want.....al [/ QUOTE ] YOU DID WHAT!! GREAT SHOT TO HIT SOMETHING THAT SMALL. Just kidding Al. Don't worry about it. Sooner or later it happens to just about everybody so forget about it buddy. A friend of mine did the same thing early in October. Now he has a bumper sticker on the front of his Yukon that says "Nubbermaster 2004". If I can get another one, I'll send you one for your bumper. Hey that's what friends are for.

Tominator
Re: *Made a 120 pound mistake, still freezer meat* i think we've all done that, or will do that someday Al. i know i did that about 5 years ago. my buddy Tom gave me a good hint on not shooting buttons--if it's alone around rut time and looks like a doe, make sure you glass it's head. lots of times those buttons get booted by momma and they're off wandering, trying to find new territory. i've seen at least 6 or 7 buttons this year, all different deer. ruttinbuc
Re: *Made a 120 pound mistake, still freezer meat* I'll have to look hard tomorrow as our muzzleloader earn a buck starts for a couple of days. I have made this same mistake in the past and try very hard not to make it again. I shot the biggest of three deer together one time thinking the big one was momma doe. WRONG! Tasted great just the same,
