VTbowman
I have a jake tail fan with some bent feather tips. Not broken, just bent. I was wondering if steaming them with an iron will work or will it damage them? Thanks
rockefeller66
Re: Repairing bent turkey tail feathers? I wouldn't think so, usually they are bent because the center piece of the tail is broken, you sure could try to iron them, I don't think it will hurt anything. VTbowman
Re: Repairing bent turkey tail feathers? Nope not broken at all. It was in a bag for a year. This caused just the tips the stay bent, the quill is not broken.

[/ QUOTE ] Not quite sure what this is...??? I assume you mean pin them straight on some sort of board and let it sit for awhile to see if they will stay. (???) I just figured that there was some way to clean them up and flatten them out evenly that a taxidermist would do for a mount on someones bird that did not take that good of care with from the field. (Rain, mud, etc...) Josh (Vtbowhunter) tacked my jakes tail fanned open to a small board and salted the crap out of it. Then we bagged it loosely for me to transport it home. I then placed it in my furnace room to dry the meaty part out. I did not know the tips were bent in the bag and it sat like this for almost a year. The feather are still in great shape, no damage at all, just 1/2 the fan has the last couple inches of about 5 feathers bent. I was hoping to steam them, without touching the iron to them, in hopes of straightening the quills. I am not sure how much a feather can take before it looses its even shape??? [/ QUOTE ] Sandwich them between carboard so they lay flat and straight.
