pointing_dogs_rule
Hey guys! I was watching this show on the outdoor channel called "backyard something". Anyway these guys shoot two deer; a nice ten and a "BIG six'. These guys are hunting down in Oklahoma. They find the nice ten then go and find the "BIG SIX". I put that in capital letters because they kept emphasizing that he was a "BIG SIX" about five times. Well, when they found him he was about 15" spread and very little mass. Might have scored 75 inches at the most. At that point this deer suddenly becomes a "MANAGEMENT BUCK". I believe this was repeated about three times. Well, I started laughing and rolling off of the couch. From a "BIX SIX" to a "MANAGEMENT BUCK" in a matter of minutes. Why cann't these guys just admit that they shot a deer that looked a lot bigger then they thought. We've all been there and this is called "ground shrinkage". I can think of a couple that I shot and upon closer examination should have been by-passed. At least I can admit that and not call them "management deer". Anyway I got a good laugh out of that one! Good luck to all the dog
VtBowhunter
Re: BIG Six point VS. management deer (LOL)!!! Why does it have to be Ground Shrinkage........maybe the water was cold.
Born2Hunt
Re: BIG Six point VS. management deer (LOL)!!! I don't like the term management deer. this term can be used way to losely. Any deer shot that may be small enough that you don't want to claim or you might be embarassed over should be passed up. If it is shot respect the animal you harvest don't be ashamed. Bond
Re: BIG Six point VS. management deer (LOL)!!! Yeah I know what you mean. I shot a lot of deer I probably should have passed, so I just say "oops, thought he was bigger" and hang it on my wall. It's not that hard. I hate the shows that say they're going to take a "management buck" and end up just shooting a young deer with an average rack instead of an old deer with a small rack. Guest okie
Re: BIG Six point VS. management deer (LOL)!!! Yeah I saw it yesterday. I couldn't believe they shot that 6 pointer because there are some monster deer in that area of Oklahoma. That show is funny anyways, the host looks like someone found him from behind a woodpile. pointing_dogs_rule
Re: BIG Six point VS. management deer (LOL)!!! Hey guys!!! Great replies!! It's all about the hunt and we should be proud of the deer we take "NO MATTER WHAT SIZE THE RACK". Buckee: I have seen your work and I am truly impressed. Once more, can you make me look any better???? Good luck to all the dog
johnf
Re: BIG Six point VS. management deer (LOL)!!! This is probibly one of those shows where the hunter makes the "perfect shot" and it's obviously too high or halfway back on the deer. Then when they start tracking it, they decide to track it the next morning. Yah, right......

Ohiobucks
Re: BIG Six point VS. management deer (LOL)!!! A big six point and a management deer are the same thing, aren't they? Six to one, half dozen to the other.....

VTbowman
Re: BIG Six point VS. management deer (LOL)!!! Heck where I hunt a meduim six is a trophy. LOL "Management buck" in Vermont means you "managed" to see A decent "buck" at all and got a shot off too. LOL To me its when they make an obvious poor or marginal shot and then say it was good and then they "decide" later to let it go the night before tracking it. You know dang well they searched all night for the dang things with dogs. To me thats teaching inexperienced hunters that see this stuff on TV that is ok, or easy, and thats just wrong. rockefeller66
Re: BIG Six point VS. management deer (LOL)!!! When I shot my buck this year I knew it was the buck we had been wathcing for 3 years now but when I shot him I felt bad, and when I found him he didn't seem quite as big as I thought he was, then I put the tape to him and he grossed almost 150! I guess I was just a little nervous and out of it when I walked up on him cause he is just as big as I have ever thought he was!

Sounds like it is getting to be that way back in my home state of Pennsylvania. "if you MANAGE to see a BUCK you shoot him". I am blessed to live out here in Iowa where I can pick and choose. Texan_Til_I_Die
Re: BIG Six point VS. management deer (LOL)!!! Did he look anything like this? This is a 5 1/2 year old 6 point that we took out this year as a "management buck". He scored 105 2/8 B&C and had a 16 1/2 inch inside spread. This is not the type of genetics we're looking for so we harvested him early in the season.
BuckNrut
Re: BIG Six point VS. management deer (LOL)!!! Livingston County, NY is known for large 6-pt bucks, like in the pic from Texan.
Guest C5Archery
Re: BIG Six point VS. management deer (LOL)!!! First of all, its Oklahoma, its sad but this state could have more trophy deer if it were not for all the homers killing these so called "Management Bucks".........The way I see it is that the majority of our bucks in this state "Manage" t oget killed every year, leaving only the button bucks who "Managed" to not get killed during a the doe slaughter that is taking place. Who next year as a 1 1/2 year old "Big 6", will "Manage" to get killed in our extended muzzeloader season, designed to "Manage" our herd.... Oklahoma is a state that is all about management...... Texan_Til_I_Die
Re: BIG Six point VS. management deer (LOL)!!! That's why you've got to be able accurately age deer on the hoof. I had the 6 point in my trailcam pic at 4.5 years old. When he showed up in front of one of the other hunters, they agreed that he was at least that old and decided to shoot him. Tooth wear indicated 5.5. If this had been a 1.5 year old deer, I would say he definitely needed to walk, but at 4.5 or 5.5 he's not showing any potential to be anything but a slightly bigger 6 point next year. Hope that all hunters practice good "management". As to the above photos: No! he was not nearly that big. Good luck to all the dog
BowJoe
Re: BIG Six point VS. management deer (LOL)!!! I have practiced good management for the past 9 yrs and have had tags go stale. Next year will be different. My new motto is "If it's brown, it's down." I won't shoot a spotted fawn but little or big antlers or none at all and silence is golden but my arrows are GOLD TIP and my broadheads ain't called Jak Hammer for nothin. I plan on Jakin' some deer up. I am already stoked for this season.
