Every year I think that I have these guys figured out (LOL)!!! Last year two nice bucks .... this year nothing.

[/ QUOTE ]

I hear ya Pointing- same here this year! I had gotten a buck(and several doe) 3 yrs in a row and was feelin' like I had this archery thing figured out................until this year!!!!!!! I hadn't missed a deer in 3 yrs.....................until this year!!!! Always got a deer in the (early) archery season......................you guessed it- until this year!!! SO I learned 2 important lessons this year:

1) don;t get over-confident and number 2) DOn;t forget to spit out your hands free grunter after grunting that BIG buck to a stop! (did that this year- string hit grunt tube and caused me to bump my release- before i had the pin settled on the deer) arrow came out 20ft short and 10 ft to the right. Of course that was the only time I saw that buck all season!!!!! frown.gif

But it wasn;t a total loss- got a doe with the bow in the late season. But to say the least, I was realy HUMBLED this year!!!!!!!!!! wink.gif

Re: Things you learned this year....

I purchased a new bow this year...... took 4 months for the string to stretch out..Yall told me my string was still creeping...and you where correct....I figured it would take only 1 month...

I read a post where the bottom half of thier climbing treestand dropped....I never tied mine together until I read that post.....2 weeks later mine dropped down and my string only let it fall 2 feet...

Everyone preeches the use of a safty harness over just a strap....I threw my stap away and love the harness system....

Websites on how to Fine Tune your bow....

Practice Practice Practice is all I hear... I shot over 3000 arrows this past year....

AIM small.........MISS small.......

I shot my first doe and my first buck (7ptr) after a few years of bowhunting... Both double lunged and neither of them went past 50 yards....

So thanks.. smile.gif

Re: Things you learned this year....

I learned that no matter how dismal the deer population looks, don't give up. There's always a chance that one of the few deer left may be a nice buck. The one animal that may have survived all the previous onslaughts may very well be a smart old-timer that's about to make his first mistake.

Re: Things you learned this year....

I learned never to set up a tree stand right on the corner of two fields. Deer seldom enter or exit a field from the corner, always 30-50 yards off of one side. Why? Probably security but who knows.

Don't assume that the deer will be eating your food plot if its less than 1/4 acre. Rabbits got most of mine - if the deer ate it, it was only in the evening. I spent alot of money making that thing also.

Don't move a stand that you know deer travel by just because you created a small food plot 80 yards away- they stick to their travel routes big time.

Don't get stuck on your stands just because the deer traveled there in the spring and summer. I missed a chance at some good bucks because I was 100 yards away from a route they'll been using in the Fall

Don't hunt with a bow during firearms season cause you're too cheap to buy another tag.

I could go on and on and on.

Re: Things you learned this year....

I learned to trust my own instincts when it comes to hanging a stand when I'm hunting a new piece of property. Just because someone else liked a certain position in past years doesn't mean its the right spot. You know with bowhunting, 50 to 75 yards out of position (where the deer tended to move through) is as good as a mile. Fortunately I was hunting with a video camera on that trip. One of my own stand selection positions later proved to be perfect.

Re: Things you learned this year....

Hey guys, well lemme before u hear what i have learned i want u to know where im coming from. Im 15 years old and have been hunting since i was 10, no thanks to my dad, i started bowhunting when i was 12. My friend got me into the sport of hunting and ever since then its been apart of me. Well my dad has been hunting for 2 years on and off ya know just to spend "quality" time with me. Well this year i got him to drop me off (like usual, i always get dropped off up at the hunt club)just bc he doesnt bow hunt but newayz, every time or alot of times i go out, i get something just because im always out there learning to things, finding new honeyholes, i spend a awful lot of time in the woods since i dont do any highschool sports. Welll openin day of bow season i found a new honeyhole set up my climber 2 days in advance. My pops dropped me off at 6:00, it was a long hike and i got to my stand about 6:30 light came around 7, and a doe walked by about 6:50. Well around 845 8 bucks jogged by me, i stopped the closest one and stuck em, by 9:00 i had em out of the woods and my dad was on my way to come get me. ONE IMPORTANT LESSOn i learned, was never to call ur dad at 9:00a.m. on opening day when u get a deer, when he has to go to work at 10a.m. and he worked nightshift till 5. frown.giffrown.gifgrin.gif

Re: Things you learned this year....

I've been fortunate enough to have harvested quite a few mature bucks and what I've learned is to be patient and hunt smart. The obvious but sometimes ignored. For instance, don't hunt the wrong wind, don't over hunt a stand, learn your property inside out. The biggest reason I take good bucks consistantly is that I've figured out how deer use the land. I feel this is most crucial.

Re: Things you learned this year....

Another thing i just learned from a forum is that human urine doesn't spook deer, i always thought that was the worst scent of all, my grandfather actually went right beneath my stand the friday before gun season and i was all worried about it, sure enough opening morning i had all of em right beneath me

I learned to hunt the places that most people would over look. Scout as muchh as possible and have a plan, a contingency plan and several stands.

I also learned that you should always be ready for when a deer may come by. The day before Thanksgiving, I had just got into my hunting spot, got settled in, and wasn't 10 minutes, I looked up and there he was, a huge buck! Not sure on how big he was because it wasn't even light out yet. Always be ready.

Re: Things you learned this year....

Where a tight sleeve over your hunting clothes on your grip hand. I shot a deer on the last weekend that I hit in the hind quarter from the bow string peeling my left arm. Fortunately I let him lay up for 24 hrs and went out the next day and found him after he went about 600 yards..Another side note was I lost blood after 200 yards and assessed the woods and where I thought he would go and ended up finding him after he went for very thick cover. Good ending to a sleepless night.

Thats exactly what I'm hoping for next year too!!!

I know this is kind of late but better late than never!!!

I learned that you should never have a bow repair problem dealt with in the off season!

Oh Sure...There's more than enough time to do it then...thats where the trouble starts.

It's better to have a problem fixed when your looking over the pro shop guys shoulder wondering when he will be done so you can get back into the woods to your treestand...you spend less money that way.

You look at New Bows while they are fixing your old one.

You touch New Bows while they are fixing your old one.

You have to figure out how to tell your wife about the New Bow you just bought crazy.gif

Meanwhile...You get to remember every time you told her:

"Honey...I wont need another Bow...This one right here will do me good for years to come" crazy.gif

What was I thinking...

Re: Things you learned this year....

i learned that :

shooting all summer will make that shot in the fall much easier. when i had to make my shot on my biggest buck ever , i went into auto pilot because of all the shooting i did .

be 100% into the hunt when on stand. i had deer come in that i didnt know were there until they were at 15 yards.

just because you have seen deer from one place 2 years in a row , doesnt mean they will be there the next year exactly the same. i wasted a stand simply because i thought they would be there again like usuall.

i need to scout better and gain permission for new ground for next year a lot earlier.

Re: Things you learned this year....

I also learned, (as Tony did), that even after 14 years of watching deer with the same habits, and setting up a blind in the same spot, year after year and being successful, that things can and do change, and sometimes you just can't figure out why. They just do.

We had to change our whole strategy this year, because the deer just weren't cooperating. We were successful, in the end.

Re: Things you learned this year....

Rangefinders sometimes lie!!!

I used to think getting two readings that essentially agree on the subject game animal itself was a sure thing. Not so. If the animal is standing in high grass up to it's whithers, you can easily get two wrong readings in a row. Lesson learned. In high grass, get the range reading off the highest part of the animal visible. Stand hunting taking readings at the start of the hunt is easy. Stalk hunts you don't have that luxury.

For 15months I was crosseyed after an auto accident. That has since been surgically corrected. However, my depth perception is awful. As a result, without a rangefinder I can't bowhunt. Sure this keeps me from second guessing it but if I get an erroneous reading. I can't tell.
