Shaun_300
Today had to be the worst day weather-wise to ice fish, but fish wise our best! Today's high was -24c, with 25mph winds, so the windchill was -36. But since our ice shack is heated with a woodstove, we can keep it about 70 degrees in there. We have two holes inside the fish shack. Today was a bright day, so I could finally get a picture to show you what it looks like down the hole. This is in about 9 feet of water, the pic isn't totally clear but you get a general idea how clear the water is. It sure is neat to see a 10 pound pike come in for the bait. This shows you how cold it was out there, my uncle caught this fish and within 5 minutes it was frozen as stiff as a board. Here's my uncle re-baiting the line after he caught the fish above. The view from the shack at about 5:00 this evening. Here's a pic of all the northern's... And to top it all off, Gran offered to cook me up some fish for supper, man it was good! VABuckSlayer
Re: Ice Fishing Pics Dang it man how can you fish like that?! I love fishing but you give a new meaning to "hardcore fisherman"! You have my respect to go fishing in those conditions! Great catch... you deserve it! Shaun_300
Re: Ice Fishing Pics Ruth, yep they're just limber sticks! We have the bait about a foot off the bottom, then we tie a loop in the line and put it on the end of the stick. Then there's about 8-10 feet of slack line by the hole which is attached to the main spool which just lays on the ice. The fish take the minnow and pull the line off the stick, then the 8-10 feet of slack gives the fish some room to run, if he wishes to run more, that's when the spool of line comes into the picture. But usually by the time we get to the hole they don't even have the 8-10 feet of line pulled down. It's a pretty slick setup.

Shaun_300
Re: Ice Fishing Pics bigbucks, we have about 16-18 inches right now because of a bit of warm weather. But normally winters are around -20 to -30 from late December to early March, the most ice I've ever seen is 42 inches. Average is 32-36" by mid February.
