I got a new rifle yesterday!

Yesterday the weather here was pretty crappy do I decided to take my son to the local outdoor store to do some browsing. I have been thinking about buying a "large game" rifle for some time because the one thing missing from my collection is a "large bore" centerfire. I decided to check out the used guns. Not much to see there so we went to the main sales counter. I looked at some Tikkas and some Remingtons but then I saw a pretty nice Savage with a laminated stock. I asked to see it and noticed that it was marked Clearance. It was chambered in .300 WSM and I had some gift cards left over from Christmas so I said what the heck and bought it. I ended up walking out the door for just over $300.00 so I feel that I got a fair deal. I did a bedding job today using Steel Bed and I will be intalling a new trigger soon (this gun is pre accutrigger - which is fine because I have a SSS trigger on my .22-250 that I love. Anyway I am just trying to decide on some glass for this rifle. Not sure which way I want to go so if anyone has some suggestions for a scope and magnification range, I'm all ears.

Here is the pic!

I think the best bang for the buck comes from the Monarch line of scopes from Nikkon, I've bought a couple in the last 6 or 8 months and will deffinately be buying more in the future. It depends on how much you want to spend though. I've had great success (not one problem) with the Bushnel Elite series scopes on my hunting rifles. Even when they were still making the Bausch and Lomb Elite series scopes basically the same as the Bushnell Elite line now, as far as I know. Between the two makes I've got 4 of the 3-9X40's, 1 2-7X32, in the 3000/3200 series and 1 6-24X40 in the 4200 series and none have given me even a hint of a problem. Great scopes for the money as well, at least in my oppinion anyhow, LOL.

As for the power, well that depends on what you want to do with it. If it is going to be a hunting rifle, I like a variable, normally a 3-9 with a 40 mil objective although I have some with lower, and higher power, also some with bigger objectives. Everybody has their own preferences though, and even a straight 4 or 6 power is good for hunting with.

Nice acquisition! Is that a factory WSM? Is the action long or short, it appears to be a long action? I don't remember Savage putting a blued action with the laminated stock. Either way, it should be fine. As far as glass, its up to the shooter. There are many different makes and models of scopes that will work just fine on your gun.

Re: I got a new rifle yesterday!

Thanks for the replies. AJ, yes it's a factory .300 WSM. It looks like this poor rifle sat in the gunshop for a few years, the ship date on the packaging noted 2003. I'm really undecided on what glass to mount on this rifle. I looked through a Burris Fullfield II the other day w/ the ballistic plex reticle and I really liked the clarity. I just cannot decide if I want to go with a 3-9x or a 4-14x scope. I am leaning toward the 4-14x in the burris or a Nikon Monarch. I also like the idea of the Nikon Buckmasters with the side focus but I've not been able to handle one and was unsure of the quality. Oh well, I've got some to to think about it as my Elk trip will be next year. Thanks again to all of you and if anyone has suggestions on the scope, let 'em rip.

Re: I got a new rifle yesterday!

i am a die hard nikon fan and have them on my main hunting rifle and one to go on another rifle when i get one. the buckmaster is a great scope and i have the 3x9x40 and it is clear in low light like you wouldn't believe. i think though my next will be a 4x16x50 with the new ao front sight adjustment on the other side panel for the left to right. it runs around 350 i think which is a great for that style of scope with a 95% light transmission for it so low light will be a brease

Re: I got a new rifle yesterday!

I just bought a Nikon Buckmaster 4.5x14 x40 for my 25-06. It has the side adjustment. Sorry to say I have not shot it yet, but I have 3 other Nikons I like very well. I would look at the higher power since your new gun will certainly reach out there, congrats by the way, I like it smirk.gif
