Re: Anybody have experience with the remington xp 100

I have one that was originally a .35 Remington. It is the rear grip XP100-R. While it was ok, I wanted more thump so I had it rebarreled by Bullberry to 338/284. It will shoot sub 3/4 MOA with 180 or 210 gr bullets. It is a thumper.

I also have a Savage Striker bolt handgun. Its chambered in .260 Remington and will definately take pronghorn at 200 or at 300 yards. I have shot groundhogs with it at 330 yards.

The Encore or G2 Contender will also do the job with the right barrel.

I have never used one but I hear they are great guns if you can find them. Field&Stream rated them as one of the best 50 guns ever made.

IMO the best factory chambering Remington ever did in the XP was the 260 Rem. If you can find a XP in this chambering I'd say snap it up. If you find one and don't want it let me know because I'd like another. You may be able to find a mid grip XP chambered in 7mmBR. This would make a fine cartridge for antelope and varmint alike. The accuracy of any gun is heavily tied to the ability of the shooter so it's most difficult to assign any gun as being accurate. Most guns can be made to shoot well.

The Weatherby CFP is a nice gun with some "custom" features already built in. It may seem expensive but when you start modifying an old gun you'll end up spending as much. They can be had in .243 and 7-08.

The Savage Striker series of guns are highly regarded. Savage has recently dropped them from production so the supplies of them are drying up fast.

What caliber were you wanting?

I've got one. But it's the old, original .221 Fireball model. It is a wonderfully fun gun and amazingly accurate. I've watched mine put 5 shots into 1" at 100 yards. I can't do it. But my gun will (in competent hands). Best I've done are some groundhogs between 150-225 yards.

I'm sure Hangunnr & AJ can supply you with more info than you'll ever need!!

i was kind of thinking 6mm, but im open to suggestions.

I'm not 100% sure but I don't think Remington ever produced a 6mm/243 XP. If that's what you have your heart set on you'll have to go the custom route.

Like I said in my earlier post a 260Rem rear grip or a 7BR mid grip would get you close. Both would be good choices for antelope out to ~300yds with the right load. The 7BR could be rechambered to 7-08 for a little more thump.

If your pockets are a little deeper H.S. Precision makes a stellar long range hunting pistol. They will chamber it to your specs. The HS guns are very similar to the XPs.

My elk hunting is done exclusively with an XP100 mid-grip purchased when it first came on the market. It began life as a .221 and became a wildcat in .35 equivalent to the .358 Winchester. My records show 15 elk to date. This latest season produced a nice 6x5 at 163 yards.A sling rather than a holster is very fast and is my preference.
