QDM

I would plant some highly attractive plots to draw and hold deer to your property. After a year or two of good QDM go to your neighbors with proof that QDM works.( pictures and herd numbers) It will not take long to convince people that it works. This is how we were drawn to QDM and still practice it today with large success. The land now managed started with a couple hundred acres and with all the neighbors now it is about 3000 acres. It has been good to all of us. wink.gif

Re: QDM

First off welcome to the forum. QDM takes time and it is hard to get going with small acreage. You just have to keep plugging away and trying to do what you can by talking to your people joining your land. Some may never do it but I would get some pictures and QDM magazines after you read them and pass them along to these people. Someday they may see the light. As far as planting you can see plenty of insight in the other post in this forum. grin.gif

Re: QDM

getting the neighbors to implement qdm is hard to do. but if done corectly can pay off in the long run for all partys involved.

so how do you get your nieghbors into letting the small bucks walk and to shoot more does. one way is show and tell. I have some goog bucks on cam and on the wall, by showing them my sucess, they want to know how I do it. then I explaine thebenafits of QDM. I will invite them to help me in habatat improvements and food plots so they can see how it is done. most will want to do the same, and do it. once they see the results of your qdm and start you can work to create a coop with the neighbors. every one then works towards the same goals and objectives. you still hunt your own property, and manage your properity but the goals are shaired (i.e. older larger bucks). also by starting a coop you may be able to pick up supplys (lime, seed and fert) at bulk prices. share equipment and work.

here is a good link to how to start a coop. http://www.qdma.com/articles/details.asp?id=50

this year I droped 20.00x5 (guys) to give them all a one year membership to the QDMA. in hopes that will get them on the same page as I was. it worked. we don't have any thing set in stone, but i'm sure with time we will. I have 4 different land owners into the coop. so my 17 acre qdm just turned into 100+ acres. much more affective.

lastly there was a good artical about a coop in michigan and it's humble beginings in the june or august issue of Quality Whitetails. well worth checking into (seeing how you are in michigan). you can get back issues for 6.00 ea. by calling 800-209-DEER (3337) this is the # for The Quality Deer Managment Assocation.

good luck in starting a coop. well worth it (just check out the QW issue. you'll see.

Re: QDM

Welcome to the forums. Good luck with the neighboring landowners. Would check with Martin(Oneidaman) and see what kind of suggestions he might have for plantings in your area.

Seems around here the more deer we pass up each year, the less we are seeing year after year. We have a serious problem with an excessive numbers of hunters crowding the edges of our property.
