My Son's First Bunny!

Yesterday we got a fresh coat of snow in central Ohio, so my son and I decided to take a walk. (Actually, my son humored dad), Anyway, I figured with the fresh snow, any tracks out there would lead to at least jumping the rabbits, so off we went.

After about 1/2 hour of tromping around in the field kicking brushpiles and other likely spots we were coming up empty, and cold--the wind was blowing pretty good.

We had about 40 yards left of field before I figured we'd have to call it a day, when all of a sudden, I jumped one. smile.gif. I had an easy shot, but held off because I wanted my son to shoot it. So I yelled "THERE HE GOES!" Nothing from my son. frown.gifgrin.gifwink.gif Dejected I heard Joe say "I saw it." So I walked over to Joe and reminded him that bunnies will do a big loop, so I said "you stay here, I'm going to follow the tracks, and I'll loop him back. Stay put, because his tracks are the only ones out here, we have a real good chance of getting him if you stay right here." Joe said "OK," and off I went.

I tracked the rabbit up to our fence, under the fence, up to the house, into the front lawn, over onto my neighbor's property (yes, I have permission), around his pole barn, and under a junked pick up truck. I went to the front of the truck and saw no tracks coming out, so I knew he was still under there, so I kicked all around the truck. I circled the truck twice with no luck, he was holding his ground laugh.gif, so I got down on my knees and looked, but couldn't see him, so I got up and kicked a few new spots and I thought I heard something so I looked back, and out of the corner of my eye, I saw brown-- wink.gif, so I quick scrambled over to my neighbor's other barn and I saw the bunny running for all he's worth right across my lawn again, right back towards Joe, and into some tall pines on the north end of the property (the ones in the background), as I was running across the lawn I saw that my wife had pulled up into the driveway, and she gave me this weird look as I was running by I just yelled "tracking a rabbit for Joe...." and she gave me that wife/mom look, kind of like this ---> smirk.gif, so then I yelled to Joe "HEADS UP JOE, HERE HE COMES!!!"

At this point I could see Joe had moved a bit, either because he got cold, impatient, or didn't believe ol' dad would turn that rabbit. Anyway, I got into the pines and I heard Joe say something, but couldn't tell what, then I heard the pop of Joe's 80 year old single shot .410 grin.gif

So bust out of the pines and I yell "DID YOU GET IT!!!????" and Joe says "YEAH, I GOT IT, I GOT IT, WAHOOOO."

Folks, I can't tell you how happy and proud I was at my son popping that rabbit. I never thought I could get that happy over killing a rabbit. I'll probably have a nervous breakdown if one of my kids ever kills a deer. grin.gif

Anyway, sorry for the long story, but, I just had to share.

BTW--I popped the rabbit's head off because it was still kicking when I walked up to it, and Joe was a little bummed by that sight. frown.gif But he was cool with it later telling me he kind of felt bad he killed it, but got quite a rush over the actual hunt and the shot. I told him "all of that is natural, and all hunters go through that, you just have to remember the result, and the result is, you just provided a rabbit paprikash or stew for the rest of the family." cool.gif

Thanks for reading!

Another pic, and thanks to my buddy Tom for shrinking the pics down.
